Calling all middle and high school science teachers! Fuel your expertise this summer by joining our teacher workshops. This summer we will conduct or co-conduct three teacher workshops:  Light Interference & LIGO (offered in conjunction with LA-STEM, June 3rd – 7th), Southern University's Project MISE (Modeling Inquiry Science Education) (July 8th – 13th), and Forces, Motion and Energy (offered in conjunction with GNO-STEM July 15th-19th).

Participation in any of these 3 workshops grants the teacher

  • Priority scheduling for LIGO field trips in the 2024-2025 academic year
  • Financial reimbursement for LIGO field trips (up to $700) in the 2024-2025 academic year
  • A stipend for attending the workshop
  • Materials to do the hands-on activities

June 3rd - 7th Light Interference: LIGO: Exploring the Universe in conjunction with LA-STEM.  Held at LIGO.

Dive deep into the captivating realms of light interference, wave phenomena, gravitational forces, and the wonders of cosmic observations at our 5-day teacher workshop offered in conjunction with LA-STEM.

  • 🔬 Discover the Power of Light and Lasers (L): Unravel the mysteries of light interference and laser technology through immersive experiments and engaging demonstrations.
  • 🌊 Delve into Wave Interference (I): Explore how wave interference occurs and how it communicates information, paving the way for groundbreaking discoveries.
  • ⚖️ Grasp the Dominance of Gravity and Gravitational Waves (G): Uncover the profound influence of gravity, from its role in celestial mechanics to the detection of elusive gravitational waves.
  • 🔭 Explore Observatories and Observations (O): Gain insights into the tools and techniques used by observatories worldwide to decipher the secrets of the universe, from distant galaxies to enigmatic black holes.
  • Accommodations provided for those far from LIGO

July 8th - 13th Project MISE (Modeling Inquiry Science Education) in conjunction with Southern University and Agricultural and Mechanical College (Baton Rouge).  Sessions held at Southern University, with trips to LIGO.  This project has follow-up beyond the summer.

Discover engaging classroom activities incorporating hands-on inquiry methods, enriched with current LIGO scientific research.  Elevate your teaching with tailored professional development, assessment tools and standards-based instruction.

  • Hands-On activities
  • Professional Networking
  • Limited to 20 participants
  • Grades 5 -9
  • Open to physical science, math, and special education teachers

To register for Project MISE click here.

July 15th - 19th Forces, Motion and Energy in LIGO in conjunction with GNO-STEM.  Held at UNO and LIGO (2 days UNO, 3 days at LIGO).

Embark on an exhilarating journey into the realm of forces, motion, and energy, and gain invaluable insights that will enhance your classroom instruction. Learn engaging and investigative hands-on activities and lessons to captivate and inspire your students.  Explore how LIGO uses

  • Forces: Explore a variety of forces and how they cause changes in motion
  • Motion:  Discover relative motion experiments, how motion demonstrates energy
  • Energy: Understand how energy is conserved, moving from kinetic to potential and back

Learn how LIGO uses forces, motion, and energy to detect gravitational waves and explore the cosmos.  Spend two days at UNO and 3 days at LIGO.  There is a $25 fee to register which is reimbursable upon attendance (except Eventbrite's 3.52 fee).
