Science Saturdays cancelled
News Release • January 7, 2021
Updates: LIGO, Livingston has cancelled the January 16th, 2021, and March - December 2020 Science Saturdays. LIGO will be closed to the public until further notice. The current Louisiana guidelines for museums prohibits organized tours, tactile exhibts and hands-on activities. Since a visit to the LIGO, Livingston Lab predominantly consists of these aspects, and since there is a continued risk of worsening the pandemic, we have suspended onsite public and school activities until the situation changes.
Out of an abundance of caution and to protect the community from any possible risk of COVID-19, LIGO Livingston Observatory is canceling its March 21st and April 18th Science Saturdays, and ALL Louisiana tours, public outreach and education events. According to Governor Edwards “we are at an inflection point now and we are going to take bold action to minimize the further spread of this illness.” As an organization that prides itself in being responsive to its community and in the interest of public safety, LIGO Livingston is suspending all K12 field trips, tours, and off-site school visits until the end of this academic year (the end of May). All public events and tours are being cancelled until at least May 15th. This decision comes from following CDC guidelines to limit events involving large gatherings of people, especially in communal/small spaces. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, and we hope to resume our regular tour schedule in the upcoming months.
