Weekly Report Highlights

LSC Issues (Reitze)

  • In preparation for the MOU panel to be held next week, I'm happy to report that most of the LSC groups have completed their reporting on time.  Dot Lloyd, Phil Ehrens and the LSC Directory Services team at Penn State have been working hard to ensure that reporting and posting of MOUs are completed in a timely manner.
  • Planning for the October LSC-Virgo meeting (October 22-25) is underway. f2f meetings for the data analysis groups are being scheduled for the weekend before the meeting, and instrument science and data analysis session block scheduling has begun.
  • The latest version of the LSC Publication Policy, approved by the Council at the July meeting, has been posted at http://www.ligo.caltech.edu/docs/T/T010168-03/
  • Observational results publication news:
    • The S4 stochastic radiometer analysis "Upper limit map of a background of gravitational waves" has been accepted in Phys. Rev. D.

PROPOSALS and REPORTS (Lindquist)

Trying to sew up the proposal for continuing operations (FY 2009 – FY 2013) and the only further changes will be for correcting significant problems or revisions that we have already agreed to accept.  A final draft will be prepared this coming week to be sent to PMA and to the Caltech Office of Sponsored research fior their initial review.

Also working on the Annual report for current Operations.  Initial attempts to extract material from the Continuing Ops proposal have proved difficult, and we may have to request additional information.  Albert has contributed a cut at one section and that will hopefully help.

The LIGO Visitors program is officially over as of July 31, 2007 (subsequent visitors are covered by Operations accounts), and a Final Report must be prepared for that Grant.  We will be asking for input from Lab persons who hosted visitors during the performance period of the award.

Preparations for the NSF Total Business Systems Review (TBSR) scheduled August 20-24 are underway.  We are providing URL pointers to various documents and we are preparing other documentation that does not currently exist.  Met with R. Seligmanof OSR to discuss preparations.  There will be another meeting towards the end of next week.

We must next begin preparing the budgets for Operations in FY 2008.

Fred:

  • USENIX seminar Mon, Tues (tcp weapons school)
  • Relocated servers from nw17 (construction)
  • Met with 2 mit security folk(along w\ Kent&Shannon) re: mit/ligo/nsf security issues
  • Replaced mainboard solidworks computer
  • More routine sysadm issues

Livingston

Dwayne:

  • Fixed a comsol graphics acceleration problem on a SURF PC
  • Removed adware from another slightly infected PC, and replaced a broken wireless mouse on same PC
  • Troubleshooting problems with site doors, and gates in the kantech software.  Resetting a controller appears to have fixed one of the problems for now.  Also modified access levels to account for the new "High Power Laser Operator" group.
  • A PC keeps losing some Dreamweaver 'site' settings.  Haven't yet figured out why, so the current fix is to re-apply the settings and hope it lasts at least for a while.
  • Still trying to track down problems one user is having with a printer. Nagios is monitoring the printer connection, and it shows 0% loss, but for some reason user is occasionally unable to print to this printer.  I have so far been unable to duplicate the 'error'.
  • Fixed a wireless connectivity problem on a laptop.  the infamous Dell laptop 'side switch' problem strikes again.
  • Replaced a busted power supply in a server.
  • With Shannon, rack-mounted the new core switch.
  • Tested the Auditorium AV setup before the SURF presentations.
  • Assisted a couple users with some HTML / PHP coding.
  • Working on a couple of new web development projects to satisfy site needs.
  • Other usual/unusual user support requests
  • Cleared spam trap

Shannon:

  • Received and installed the new core switch in the rack with Dwayne.
  • Attending USENIX Security conference this week.
  • Arranged a lunch meeting with the MIT network/security folks while in Boston.  Today at lunch... notes to follow.
  • Attended a training session at USENIX.

Hanford

Christine:

  • Still moving users to the new disk system.  I'm about 2/3 done andhope to finish up by the end of next week.
  • Helped a user get SSH tunneling working on his MAC.
  • Archived files on a PC that is being re-built from Windows to Linux.
  • Discovered that ESnet has been charging us for an OC3 network connection when we have upgraded to GigE and FE.  ESnet does not have a cost model for our type of network connection, so they have waived all fees for FY07 and will develop a cost model for us for FY08.
  • Met with Larry and Mike P. to work out strategy to move Primavera/Prism server up here to LHO.  Mike P. will come up Aug. 26 thru 28 to help install and setup the server.

Caltech

Christian:

  • John Zweizig- Configured new laptop with dual boot OS (Windows XP and Ubuntu).
  • 3flr W/B Hard drive failure on visitors¹ workstation. Replaced the entire system with a newer one.
  • 3flr W/B - Replaced toner cartridges on HP 5500 printer and stocked printer cartridges that were delivered to LIGO this week.
  • Minor tweaks on the unit in the display case.
  • Other misc.: Continued onsite software/phone support.

Veronica:

  • LIGO:  A few changes to the homepage script to make it fully compliant with the W3 standard.  Searched for an easy to use, open-source html generator/update tool for Ed Maros.  Looking into various wikis to try.  Miscellaneous web updates.
  • LSC:  Posting the presentations from the July meeting.  Updates of the database of technical papers, other website updates.

Mike:

  • Rack mounted a backup DNS server in B/A rm: 18 server room.
  • Working on backup server for Primavera/Prismpm too ship to Hanford.
  • Larry and I setup and installed a new UPS in rm: 19.
  • Recovered data for John Zweizig due to bad sectors on his old laptop.
  • Swapped out the projector in Millikan. Christian gave me a hand with this.
  • Other additional user support and sysadmin tasks.

Larry:

  • Received a number of items ordered. All items have been delivered and working on installation of the GC items. Working on procurements for new rackmount systems and laptop. Trying to get some of the license renewals done. Still waiting for invoices and replies from different companies.
  • Working on documentation concerning equipment loans. Along that same line I now have a copy of the documents CIT requires for equipment to be temporarily assigned to a non CIT employee. This will help on the LIGO documentation.
  • Working out logistics on a number of different projects: New UPS installations, server relocation for the Prism system, upgrades to a number of web servers, transition to a new mail server and edge switch upgrades for a couple of different locations.
  • Still working on the conference documentation.
  • Still moving old home directories to tape.
  • Setup a new CDS home directory for the Wilson House group. It should give them the space they need.
  • Worked on a couple of server hiccups.
  • Assisted a number of users resolve different issues and modified a couple of accounts.
  • Trying to get things ready for the groups that will be leaving in the near future.

Suspensions

From: "Greenhalgh, RJS \(Justin\)" <J.Greenhalgh@rl.ac.uk>

ALUK held its latest Project Management Committee on 3 August 2007 (See LIGO-M070149-00-K). A brief activity summary follows:

  • RAL: The noise prototype is complete at LASTI to a state in which it can be integrated to the ISI. About 2 weeks' work needs to be done to suspend it; options for getting this 11 M070149-00-K work done over the coming ~6 weeks are being explored. FEA and experimental work on the BS structures have concluded that they do behave as predicted; the next steps are to verify that this remains true when the bolts are clean and to decide whether the stays would have a beneficial effect.
  • Glasgow: The main issue is continuing delays at the polishers. It is still feasible to get the first PU mass to LASTI in time for the bonding staff window, the current target is the week of 27th August. The ear bonding jig design is now satisfactory, and work on the ribbon pulling and welding machine continues.
  • Birmingham/Strathclyde: there have been frustrations in obtaining wire and in getting orders placed, but it still looks as though the OSEMs and electronics needed for the suspension assembly and alignment will be available when need in late September.
  • Overall: The noise prototype is ready for integration with the ISI, and will need ~2 man-week’s further effort to suspend it. It needs to be suspended before the ISI/SUS frequency/control test can be run in about 6 weeks’ time. It is hoped to have electronics and OSEMs at about this time. There is concern that the PU mass may not be ready in time for the previously-advertised window of staff availability; steps are being taken to fix this; there is still about 2 months slack before the noise prototype critical path would be affected. Next task is to get closure on the FM and BS designs.

Recycling Mirror Suspensions

  • Working with Greer, Bob, Norna and Calum on a regular basis on the recycling mirror design. Nothing significant to report. Greer is spending a few days documenting the FEA work he's been doing the last few months.

Output Mode Cleaner

  • Weekly meeting moved to Friday at 8am PT this week only.

Enhanced LIGO Earthquake Stops

  • Held a meeting yesterday. Joe is going to try to have Southern make one more prototype to check the small change that should enhance the spring action. Joe is making the changes to the drawings. We'll make the large stops from BeCu, but the small ones will be modified from a purchased silver-plated, vented, socket head cap screw. This is because only the 1/2-13 threads were opened up so many times. The 3/8-16 threads should be in good shape. Both will have tips made of fused silica. I've asked Helena to pursue costing of the production tips.

From: k mailand kmailand@ligo.caltech.edu

  • I'm working on a suspended Black Glass Cavity beam dump proposal, for Mike, also finishing the setup for the faraday 4 wire dampened suspension test,  setup parts are complete.
  • A set of spherical and ball bearing parts have completed a clean and bake cycle, we can now see how they perform in a dry condition.
  • The preliminary assembly of the installation arm tool has started, also work on a test setup has started.
  • I spoke to Brian at LASTI this week re. the tooling sent to them, also made a design sketch for Helena re. a cleaning setup for the test mass.

From: Helena Armandula ahelena@ligo.caltech.edu

Advanced LIGO SUS - LASTI

  • Getting the final tooling manufactured and the lab supplies required to perform the silica bonding of the ears to the test masses during the week of August 27th.
