PROPOSALS and REPORTS (Lindquist)

We met Monday to review the proposed staffing levels for LIGO Continuing Operations.  We decided that it is necessary to integrate the Continuing Operations plan and the Advanced LIGO plan more tightly, and Carol and I have been working on that this week.  The review of staffing levels will continue this next Monday based upon those results.

LIGO Hanford Observatory (LHO) and Interferometer Operations (Raab)

Summary of S5 Activities at LIGO Hanford Observatory  (compiled by M. Landry)

The H1 ran for the week with a lowered duty cycle of 79%, impacted by investigation work on the problematic H2 IFO.  Ranges were typical, 15-16Mpc.  H2 however was only in science mode 55% of the time, with a reduced range hovering around 3-4Mpc for much of the week, kept low by f^{-5/2} noise.  Many obvious potential problems have been checked and dismissed, e.g. docking ISCT10 is not the problem, pendulum modes suggest the optic is not hung up (although some argue this is not conclusive - more measurements here), a water cooling passage on the PSL was cleared but the noise remained, the FSS and ISS were deemed innocent, etc.  Many IOCs were rebooted.  The PSL was assessed and nothing extraordinary was found, and 2k suspensions checked out fine.

Some our standard S5 summaries are linked here: Tuesday maintenance, CDS maintenance, latest range & duty cycle compilation

LIGO Livingston Observatory (LLO) and Interferometer Operations (Giaime)

S5 run (Igor Yakushin):

  • We spent 10 hours on Tuesday and 9 hours on Wednesday on commissioning:
    • DC readout measurements;
    • Channel changes: 7 channels added, 1 removed;
    • Scattering experiments at X-end.
  • Inspiral range was around 14Mpc most of the week except for today: we have not yet fully recovered after yesterday's commissioning and there will be couple hours more used today. Duty cycle for this week is 70%.

CDS Computing (Lisa Bogue):

  • Continued working on advLigo CDS security plan.
  • Helped recover from a power outage.
  • Ordered a computer from penguin computing as a testbed box for running borkspace (i.e., simulink front end code generation system).
  • Made channel changes in the frame builder to support Valery's IFO measurements.

LLO Outreach (John Thacker):

  • Prepared and delivered programs for 3 MSP teacher professional development groups.
  • Update to LIGO SEC Web page.
  • Update to LIGoOp Web page.
  • Provided tour for LSU students.

Caltech

(Dan Kozak)

  • Got most of our LDR customers to increase their gridftp timeout.
  • Spent much time on truly bizarre problem that prevented PSU from getting data from CIT (lsof would report the file that it was looking for with a .tmp extension, even tho' no such file existed and the non-.tmp version was really what it wanted, then it wouldn't stage).
  • Created chart of 6140 test results, did more tests.
  • Did H1 & L1 h(t) work: FrCheck and md5sum of files on nodes, copied them to /archive/frames, published them into LDR.  Work continues on the same for H2.
  • Hacked publishing scripts to run md5sum on morbo.
  • Talked to user mito about L0 usage again (had him crank back to 3 jobs to free up some tape drives).
  • Wrote up instructions for weekly tape ingest for when I was out.
  • Met with Scott Koranda, Ben Johnson & Stuart vis a vis future LDR plans.
  • Submitted morbo crash info to Sun, haven't gotten a response (following up today).
  • Dealt with fallout from dataserver-cit "crash" (as it turns out, probably just really overwhelmed with work).
  • Started doing individual samfsdumps for user's home directories that have been moved to ZFS.

(Phil Ehrens)

  • Large number of grid certificate related tasks.
  • Ongoing work with MOU webforms. Added DCC number cookie support to wiki. Updated documentation and page link connectivity. Changed edit page mode to use new window and to return to history(-2). Many other small changes.
  • Assisted in initial diagnosis of network problems arising on 06/26.

(Erik Espinoza)

  • Troubleshooting GC network issues w/ Larry.
  • Detected and removed rogue access point.
  • Upgraded kernel on nodes for NFS fixes.
  • Backported nfs-utils from CentOS 5 to FC4.
  • Migrated users to split home dirs, qfs/zfs.
  • Built internal yum repository.
  • RAID Disk offline on node47, rebuilt RAID in place.
  • Participated in OS Committee.
  • Worked with Stuart to execute Sun Diagnostic tests on file server.
  • Closed ticket #65515148 w/ Sun - x4600M2/RAID issues.
  • Fixed pam_keyinit bug in new openssh package I built.

Livingston

(Igor Yakushin)

  • Debugged and committed to CVS the new version of segpagegen script that includes GEO science segments and STATEVEC.5.12 which is a good approximation to Virgo's science segments  (science segments with some category 2 DQ flags applied).
  • Modified the replication monitor script to monitor replication from CIT to the sites relying on Virgo frames: http://ldas.ligo-la.caltech.edu/ldas_outgoing/archiver/Status_Pages/SEGMENT_REPLICATION
  • Filled the gaps in segment database for LLO's and LHO's LFNs and the corresponding state vector segments including Science.

(Dwayne Giardina)

  • Tape eject for shipment to CIT.
  • libframe upgrade.
  • Moved one tape robot power supply to the second UPS.

  • Still working through isues on the ligo.org web authentication.  Still not working with the apache module.  Working with Tyler, et al. on this. May have to set up a temporary test server.  Not sure if it is a Ubuntu problem or a kerberos/apache problem at this point.
  • Worked on some visio drawings & docs for upcoming syslog stuff.
  • Helped Larry, Mike, et al. with a network issue at CIT.  Interesting plots as a result of that.
  • Going through 8 years of cruft and trying to organize & delete duplicate files, documents, etc.  This is going to take some time...
  • Still working the bug introduced by a Solaris patch from 2 1/2 weeks ago.
  • Working with Foundry on a quote for the core switch.  Discovered yesterday that pricing will change soon (up 25%), so time is of the essence.
  • Ordered a laptop for Brian.

Hanford

  • LIGO: Addressed an issue of copyright ownership per a request from National Geographic Video Productions. Misc. web updates.

(Larry)

  • Worked a number of purchases. Updated a couple of maintenance contracts. Purchased misc. items for the different groups. Presently, trying to go through the items purchased over the last 4 years that need the new justification memo filled out. The old form is no longer sufficient.

Week Summery - This week was pretty progressive. I got some new results that i could compare with actual LIGO data. I solved the problem that i had last week- two peaks at 60 and 61 Hz. I've gotten rid of 61 Hz . I am trying to make my graph more similar to the actual graph from LIGO.
