LIGO Hanford Observatory (LHO) and Interferometer Operations (Raab)

Summary of Commissioning Activities at LIGO Hanford Observatory  (compiled by M. Landry)

Commissioning activities read like an extension of last week: continued work on the
output mode cleaner (OMC) on the 4k, plus sundry work on the 2k, in part impacted
by difficulties in locking due to chasing alignments.  However, new commissioning projects
were started and some understanding of 2k mobility was gleaned (see below).

Recall that so-called dewar bonks are responsible for the majority of 4k unlocking
events.  Another attempt to aright the LN2 dewar was made, however, at least one
new dewar-bonk-induced unlocking has been observed.

Calibration of the atomic clock to unfold a secular drift of 55ns/day, noted during S3,
is underway.

4K IFO

OMC studies included the following:

Other 4k experiments included PSL cleanup, in which an attempt to eliminate forward
scattering was largely unsuccessful, but the removal of the (recently installed) laser power
control hardware resulted in fewer optical surfaces in the beam path (eight!).

Acoustic noise observed in ASPD3 (the ISCT4 path without the OMC) was
mitigated by cleaning optics, cleaning again for good measure, but mostly, by
swapping out a small (.5") mirror.

2K IFO

The 2k continued to exhibit alignment problems.  New LSC code was loaded in
mid stations, necessitated by last week's installation of lock acquisition photodiodes.
Furthermore, new DACs for the ETM locking QPDs were installed.

To minimize EM coupling to instruments, power supplies are being moved out of the
external vault located in the desert near MY.  Channels are being reconfigured in the LVEA,
(more for experimenters there), and 110b's moved from MY to MX to support seismometer
hookup.

A WFS2 DC centering servo was commissioned, composed of a custom anolog
servo board driving a Newport tip-tilt mirror.  Input beam motion is likely responsible
for mobile MC-transmitted power and arm powers.  Shifts in the input beam appears to
originate with the installation of  new MC WFS.

DAQ
New statevector code was loaded.  FB1 and FB0 work included the addition of a half
a terabyte of LDAS RAID disk space, and code patches to improve reliability and
efficiency of the framebulders.

LIGO Livingston Observatory (LLO) and Interferometer Operations (Zucker)

Announcement:

Daniel Sellers joined the LLO team Monday as our newest Operations Specialist. Many of you know Dan pretty well already; he's worked at LLO with our electrical contractor Excel for some years, and knows as much about our facility as many old-timers. At the moment he's giving the HEPI crew a boost in the LVEA. In case you don't already know him, please introduce yourself and welcome Dan aboard when you see him!

L1 Commissioning highlights (Zucker)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Primary thrust remains on HEPI. The HAM2 actuator installation was finished after resolving a problem with loose bolts in the original support structure. Alignment was verified afterward by locking the mode cleaner Wednesday night. We have temporarily lost use of the mode cleaner now as actuator installation is up to HAM1, and the optical tables IOT1 and ISCT1 had to be pivoted out of the way. In the process we have noticed an impending interference issue with the new actuators when they are pivoted back; Oddvar has designed some adapters to change the height of IOT1 so it will clear.

There was significant progress on commissioning the controls on the X end. An apparently faulty actuator valve was swapped out to cure an anomalous amplitude dependence on one horizontal actuator; all responses are now uniform. Brian O'Reilly built an efficient software infrastructure for automated system identification (measurement of the plant transfer functions) and tested it. The measured responses are fairly similar to those shown at LASTI, and look nicely diagonal.

Today Dennis Coyne loaded control laws (after fixing a sign error found last night) and the 4 vertical-mode loops were locked to the position sensors.

On the vacuum equipment, Rus found a small leak on one of the gate valve annulus connections in the corner station; after fixing it we took RGA scans and finally declared victory on the vacuum punchlist. The corner volume is now reconnected together under nominal pumping and can be reopened to the beamtubes as soon as heavy lifting is over (planned third week of June).

Safety (Rich Riesen)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Found no safety concerns during my weekly site tour.

Re qualified Oddvar Spjeld in the use of forklifts and the staging bldg. crane.

Completed the CPR/First aid/AED Instructor training course.

Distributed the revised LLO Laser procedure for approval.

In the process of revising LLO site safety procedures.

Updating all safety signage throughout the site.

Gearing up for the LLO site safety audit (June).

Working with Ed Chargois on property and GSA matters.

Obtained the necessary prescription in order to purchase an AED. The AED is on its way.

LLO Seismic retrofit (Rich Abbott)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
1.  Progress continues on HEPI.  HEPI hydraulic actuators are installed on both end stations, HAM 2,3 and 4 in the corner station.  Work has commenced on HAM 1.

2.  The piping installation is complete in the end stations.  All BSCs, HAM 4&3 are complete in the corner station.  Much of the piping work is completed on HAM 1 and 2.  The contractor estimates completion of the task by the week of 7 June 2004

3.  Received the repaired valves back from Parker.  All valves have been through the calibration process now.  There are still some valves at Parker awaiting repair.

4.  HEPI electronics is awaiting installation in the Y-end station. Installation will be complete in the beginning of next week.

LLO Seismic retrofit (Oddvar Spjeld)
---------------------------------------------------------------------

General computing (Roddy)
--------------------------------------------------------------------
* Current bandwidth usage can be seen at http://teche.ligo-la.caltech.edu/mrtg/LLO-Router/130.39.245.1_1.html
* Archived bandwidth usage can be seen at http://teche.ligo-la.caltech.edu/mrtg/archive/ under the dated folder for the week of interest.
* The internet connection has been extremely unstable for much of the last week.  There were several periods of downtime since last Tuesday:
  May 18: 10 hours
  May 17: 1 hour
  May 16: 3 hours
  May 12-13: 22+ hours
  May 11: 18 minutes, and 1.5 hours
Things have been stable since around noon on May 18th.  Bell South is promising a full report of what happened and also why we have been having intermittent service since January.  After many hours working with them on the phone, here is a short summary of what happened:
1) Bell has changed out several interface cards at the repeater locations.  This is to change all of the cards to the same rev level.
2) Bell mistakenly told LSU to change several settings on the LSU router which was causing the circuit to remain down if there was a reset on their interface.  Once this was was corrected it seems that the circuit should automatically recover after a period of downtime.
This is basically the same circuit behavior that we have had since January.
3) When the Bell service tech came out to the LLO site, he measured light levels, etc. and everything looked OK as far as the fiber is concerned.
* I began setting up the new web server last night.  I have reinstalled Solaris and started setting up the raid disks.  Both the system disks and the web storage will be configured as RAID to provide redundancy.
I will start compiling Apache, etc. tonight.  I will also have to take the web server down for a short time tonight or tomorrow night to copy over the files from the old server.

CDS software (Parameswariah)
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Upgrading the CDS gateway machines river and london Solaris 9. river almost complete, london yet to start. Also starting a few issues with internal sun machines.

Working on automating the HEPI status medm screen generation. Reading up on the new code put in by Rolf and co. Will soon start to prepare a CDS failure reviving document.

Rearranged the disks on both the frame builders after adding HEPI fast and slow channels. Requested LDAS to mail me the new T3 disk array for moving DMT trends to the new disk.

HPLF and L1 Commissioning (Amin)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
HPLF: Technical details with IPG Industries have been resolved. They will be altering our laser to meet our criteria as requested. We will be sending the laser back to IPG as soon as we obtain a return form.

Phase Noise: This week Tom Nash and I have been going through several iterations attempting to measure the relative phase noise being generated by the new Wenzel Industries oscillators. Unfortunately, we have been having problems with the background RF noise floor.  This prohibits us from taking data with good SNR. Furthermore, occasionally our measurement is overcome with 60 Hz harmnoics. Another difficulty is the sensitivity of the oscillator ovens. Touching the devices can result in an observable frequency change when both oscillators are beat against each other.

PSL: I measured the level of RFAM coming from the EOM chain.  Comparing the numbers for the 24.5 MHz EOM to those obtained 4 years ago, I will need to make a few adjustments to the goniometers. I also inspected the EOMs for any obvious deterioration via flashlight and mirror technique. I could find no cataracts or crystalline errors that might degrade laser throughput.

Data analysis (Yakushin)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
LDAS admin:
1) u1d6@t3-7 failed
2) T3 for DMT frames has arrived and needs to be mounted and configured.

Data analysis:
1) Hosting waveburst code review face to face meeting at LLO.
2) Analyzing how reconstructed triggers depend on the start of waveburst job.

Burst analysis (Franzen)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Prepared more results of my S2 hardware injection study using WaveMon and WaveBurst triggers. Go to
http://www.ligo-la.caltech.edu/~franzen/restricted/inject1.html
http://www.ligo-la.caltech.edu/~franzen/restricted/inject2.html
in order to observe the results.

PeterKing

In light of recent problems apparently experienced at LLO with the frequency stabilisation servo's slow loop, I took another look at the state code.  The particular state in question is the one that calculates the PID parameters and writes it to the slow actuator.  According to my understanding of the "when" statement, the PID parameters are never actually calculated if the reference cavity drops out of lock.  A quick discussion with Ashfaq led to a monitoring solution to see the particular when statement is actually executed when the frequency servo is unlocked.

A similar piece of code is being worked on for DC control of the intensity.

Lee Cardenas

The 10 watt laser is back again in progress for alignment and mode match.
We (Peter and I) still have the power output not being stable as power degrades with time
and temperature.

Output Mode Cleaner (OMC)

PeterKing

Quotations for the super-polished optics and coatings were requested from Advanced Thin Film and MLD Technologies.

I drew up the dimensions for a new output modecleaner based on a few desirable properties whim.  Namely increased mass, larger bores and single piece construction for the prism and spacer.  A quick check with a glass shop as to whether it was feasible did not reveal any problems.

Thermal Compensation System (TCS)

Mike Smith

All items for 4 TC systems are on order and/or are being made by machine shops. A new schedule for assembly, installation, and commissioning of the LHO and LLO TC systems was created and is awaiting approval. Assembly could begin on 6/7 at both sites, with commissioning completed by 7/2 at LHO and by 7/16 at LLO.

Ken Mailand

The TCS machined parts for LHO and LLO will return from anodizing and be shipped 5-27.

substrate #2 shows a lower and  uniform absorption.

We still have one more sample the 15 cm dia. substrate, scanning is in progress.
We have modified the plate holder for this substrate.

The fabrication of the rods for the laser enclosure have been completed and there are all
installed in place.  The cover plates being cut to size is in PROGRESS!

40 Meter Interferometer (Weinstein)

<li> Osamu and Bryan have uncovered what we believe to be a fundamental design problem in the Advanced LIGO length sensing scheme which the 40meter has been working towards testing. The design calls for two pairs of RF sidebands, f1 and f2 (for AdvLIGO this might be 9 & 180 MHz; for the 40m, it's 33 & 166).<br>

The CARM and DARM degrees of freedom are sensed at f1 and f2, respectively, while the short dofs (PRC, MICH, SEC) are sensed at f2-f1, f2+f1, or both ("double demod"). The idea is that the short dof sensing is derived only from the sidebands and is undisturbed by the arm-amplified carrier phase shifts.<br>

We have modeled this scheme using Twiddle and Finesse, and it agrees with the matrix presented by Peter Fritchel in an LSC meeting back in 2000 or so.<br>

We have implemented these two pairs of sidebands at the 40m using two EOMs in series. This produces "sidebands on sidebands", ie, local oscillators at f2-f1 and f2+f1. These were apparently neglected in all the modeling. They exist, and they can beat with the carrier at f2-f1 and f2+f1. This is not a negligible effect; to the contrary, it completely swamps the signals for the short dofs. Osamu has confirmed this using a modified FINESSE model. Osamu's results are <a href="http://www.ligo.caltech.edu/~omiyaka/20040517_sbsb.pdf"> here.</a> <li> It turns out that Bryan was unable to lock the Glasgow 10m RSE interferometer for exactly this reason. Bryan's summary of the Glasgow work is <a href="http://www.physics.gla.ac.uk/~bryanb/stuff/Caltech_Intro_01.pdf"> here.</a>

<li> We are considering several possible solutions to this problem:
<ul>
<li> eliminate the sidebands on sidebands by placing the two EOMs    in parallel, using a Mach-Zender
<li> eliminate the sidebands on sidebands by employing 2 more EOMs    to kill f2-f1 and f2+f1
<li> Generate f1 and f2 but not f2-f1 or f2+f1 by sending an appropriately    tailored RF signal into one broad-band EOM
<li> find a different combination of demod phases and other signal processing  to allow us to extract clean signals for PRC, MICH, SEC    with the existing EOM configuration (it is not clear that this will  be successful, but we will try).
<li> some more radical solution which might require changes to the  interferometer or the length sensing optics and electronics.
</ul>

<li> Dave Tanner & Dave Reitze have experience with complex modulation of broadband EOMs, and they say that we can indeed reduce the sidebands on sidebands by, maybe 10 dB. We need more like 20 dB suppression, as well as a system to monitor and actively kill the sidebands. <li> Bryan and Osamu have started looking into the finesse model in a bit more depth to see if we can reduce the effect of the arm cavities by tweaking the demod phasing and other such tricks. It looks as if it might be possible if we're not too fussy about offsets (at least initially) but needs some more in depth examination. If it is possible then the diagonalisation of the central part will not be as good and the problem of lock acquisition will still be just as bad due to large signals in the central part signals around the arm cav carrier resonances - only cancels at the operating point as far as I can see. We need to look at this a bit more but it is unlikely to change the conclusion that we need to use a Mach Zender. <li> The best course for now seems to be to use a Mach-Zender interferometer because it has no sidebands of sidebands from beginning. Frequency noise by a doppler shift will be considerable, but it should be of the same order as one produced by the other mirrors.

<li> To control the MZ, Osamu asked Jay to get a PZT driver like PMC which has a fast response up to ~100kHz. Internal modulation using 33MHz should work well to get signal to control the MZ. We will probably put a pick off BS for parallels EOMs just after PMC, so MZ won't change the path length.

<li> Osamu is writing a proceeding paper on the 40m program for SPIE. The effect of the sidebands of sidebands is already included. A draft can be found <a href="http://www.ligo.caltech.edu/~omiyaka/spie2.pdf">here.</a>

<li> Rolf has prepared new LSC software for the 40m dual-recycling configuration. Some more work is required before it can be installed; Rolf will return to this after his 2 week sojourn to LLO. New MEDM screens and the EPICS sequencer are in progress.
<li> For lock acq, this code expects to include InputMatrix40m.c; the development of this code is the subject of much active thinking by Rob and everyone else in our group.

<li> Ben has delivered two 33MHz Wavefront Sensors to the lab, and is getting two boxes for them from the machine shop. These complete the PD requirements, and join the other recently delivered QPD, double demod PDs, and 66MHz LSC PDs at the lab.

<li>  Don has been installing the cross connects for the rewiring of our LSC rack to accommodate the double-demod signals.

<li> Ben has traced and characterized the PSL fast channel DAQ readback paths. To the design, they are being treated properly by the interface card.  The next step is to see if the gain that was dictated by the design is appropriate for the signal levels that we have here.

Weekly Physics Meeting
---------------------------
Biplab presented H1 field intensity profiles generated using actual mirror phasemaps. Sany Yoshida from Southern Louisianna University presented his measurements at LLO of the coupling between translational and angular degrees of freedom originating from seismic noise through stacks. Patrice Hello, Matteo Barsuglia and Monica from Groupe Virgo, LAL, Orsay were present in our meeting today.

Adaptive FFT
-------------------
(Hiro, Biplab) We solved the problem for very small size final beam-width
(for a converging beam) by increasing the Window size of FFT computation.

H1 mirror phasemaps
-------------------------
(Biplab) With help from Xiao Xu sorted out all H1 mirror phase maps.
After that ran FFT with these phasemaps. These are available at

 http://www.ligo.caltech.edu/~bbhawal/maps/

The mirror maps generate asymmetries in Sideband outputs and cause differences between two humps of the sideband profile usually observed in a cold state of H1. With heating this becomes more uniform but some asymmetry still remains. Carrier remains to be symmetrical in either cold or hot cases. It is found that the Beam-splitter is mainly responsible for this. Other mirrors have minor effects as compared to beam-splitter. We are now studying how this affects the WFS signals.

Code development and maintenance
----------------------------------------
(Hiro,Melody)
 Released E2E version 2.0.1.
A macro usage information is included in the set output file. This makes it much easier to find the problem related to macros. Macro implementation itself is much better than before, and very close to what is documented in the Primitive manual.

--------------------------------------------------
LDAS Software Systems (Edward Maros for Blackburn)
--------------------------------------------------

This week has seen the 1.1.0 release of LDAS. The installation was completed in a twelve hour period (partly due to network issues with Livingston). All of the sites were upgraded to DB2 8.1 fixpack 5. This included the the migration of the existing data from DB2 7.2 and the creation of new databases due to table changes for sngl_inspiral and gds_triggers. After the data was migrated, the DB2 7.2 software package was removed from all the sites. This release also includes the first beta version of the datacondCaller library which allows the usage of the algorithms of the datacondAPI outside of the LDAS system.

With the publication of GEO data into the data repository, tests are being developed to validate LDAS's handling of the GEO files.

The main focus is to close out problem reports. Tor wards this goal the following work has been done.

ManagerAPI:
    * Work on being able to throttle the number of jobs send to an API
(PR#2398) and to throttle jobs to an API based on the amount of
memory currently in use by an api (PR#2399). Most of the work for
throttling based on the number of jobs is complete. Throttling
based on memory usage is hindered by OS efficiency issues.
    * Also being worked on in the manageAPI is the issue of jobs with
      extra braces getting stuck (PR#1852)

cmonClient:
    * An explicate error is now generated and cmonClient will exit if
the BWidget package cannot be located or loaded (PR2442).
    * Code that was only being used by cmonClient has been moved from
the genericAPI to the cntmonAPI/tcl/client directory (PR#2433).
This minimizes the risk of changes these files affecting the
building of LDAS as a whole.
    * The resource files LDAScntlmon.rsc and LDASdb2utils.rsc have been
committed to CVS to reflect the values of the 1.1.0 release.

metadataAPI:
    * The bgLoop time for waking up dataRecv threads has been adjusted
from 10 seconds to 60 seconds; The resource variable for thread
timeout has been adjusted from 20 seconds to 50 seconds. Both of
      these changes stem from PR2435.
    * The long DB2 error messages which may be returned by the
metadataAPI are no longer truncated (PR#2484 and PR#2495).

eventmonAPI:
    * The insertion rate variable has been clarified in its meaning and
cmonClient has been enhanced to allow for its modification in real
      time (PR#2474).
    * Additional cleanup was done when a job is killed to prevent the
API from getting assertion errors (PR#2454). This was mostly seen
when running the putStandAlone exception tests.

frameAPI:
    * If the -usertype option to the createRDS command ends in a number,
then it is taken as the level of RDS to produce (PR#2406).  If the
-usertype and -type options have the same base, then the level
number must not be specified or it must be greater than the level
      specified by the -type option.

diskcacheAPI:
    * PR2455 is being actively pursued. Currently when a mount point is
removed, its frame files and sub directories are correctly removed
from the diskcache and queries do not falsely report the existence
of frame files. When the mount point is put back, frame files in
subdirectories are correctly restored, but frame files in the
mount point directory itself are not. This code will not be placed
into CVS until this issue is resolved.

dbaccess library:
    * The strange strings seen at the completion of some wrapper jobs
have been removed (PR#2486). This was due to an error in the
lexical analyzer used by the dbaccess library used to parse the
      SQL files for table definitions.

Automated Test Scripts:
    * The putStandAlone test has been modified to accept the user
specified database for all of its commands.
    * The metadata exception test has been extended to test more DB2
      errors and ilwd errors.

Porting To Commercial Compilers:
    * Efforts continued to get all of LDAS compiled with Sun's
commercial compiler. Most of the lib directory now compiles and
many of the test programs in these directories PASS.

* Archived bandwidth usage can be seen at
http://teche.ligo-la.caltech.edu/mrtg/archive/ under the dated folder

* The internet connection has been extremely unstable for much of the
last week.  There were several periods of downtime since last Tuesday:
   May 18: 10 hours
   May 17: 1 hour
   May 16: 3 hours
   May 12-13: 22+ hours
   May 11: 18 minutes, and 1.5 hours
Things have been stable since around noon on May 18th.  Bell South is
promising a full report of what happened and also why we have been
having intermittent service since January.  After many hours working
with them on the phone, here is a short summary of what happened:
1) Bell has changed out several interface cards at the repeater
locations.  This is to change all of the cards to the same rev level.
2) Bell mistakenly told LSU to change several settings on the LSU
router which was causing the circuit to remain down if there was a
reset on their interface.  Once this was was corrected it seems that
the circuit should automatically recover after a period of downtime.
This is basically the same circuit behavior that we have had since
January.
3) When the Bell service tech came out to the LLO site, he measured
light levels, etc. and everything looked OK as far as the fiber is
concerned.
- Began setting up the new web server last night.  I have reinstalled
Solaris and started setting up the raid disks.  Both the system disks
and the web storage will be configured as RAID to provide redundancy.
I will start compiling Apache, etc. tonight.  I will also have to take
the web server down for a short time tonight or tomorrow night to copy
over the files from the old server.

- Helped organize and set up computers for pcard training held here on
5/19.  Helped test the software prior to testing. Sat in on the training
and made myself available to help with any problems.  Removed the
computers and put them all away after the training.
- Replaced the hard drive and reinstalled all software on a user's
desktop PC.  This is a hard drive that had been shown to have bad
sectors during Mike Pedraza's audit.  Installed Win2k, all the drivers,
and all the standard GC application software.  While doing the installs
I also discovered that the network hub was defective.  I replaced the
hub and cat5 cable.
- This weekend I will be doing a disk image of another user's hard drive
so that I can replace that drive.  This is a SCSI drive on a workstation
PC.  The user requested the disk image instead of a complete re-install.
-  Misc. user support and purchasing.

-Ran security updates on the following user workstations this week: Barry
Barish, Bill Taylor, Lee Cardenas, Mark Barton, Synchrotron lab computer
(deimos) and Mike Smith.
-Reloaded my office workstation. This was due to many XP blue screen
crashes. This occurred after testing various software applications and
running OS/software patches and adding additional security, which I do
before applying to user workstations.
I have loaded VMWARE to prevent this from happening again. On the VMWARE
side I have loaded server 2000, win 2000 PRO, and XP pro for running these
types of tests.
-Worked on a network connection for Riccardo De'Salvo down in the OTF lab.
I also setup a workstation for Barbara Simoni down there, which included me
updating OS patches & Norton anti virus software and running a virus scan
to make sure this pc is not infected with a virus.
-I worked with George a good part of this week installing the updated
application DCC database. Everything seems to be working for now.
-Worked on 2 RMA Hard Drives for Al Wilson. I have shipped these out for
replacements.
-I am loading a new laptop for GariLynn. I still have a few more
engineering packages to load. Then get a ghost image before I give this to her.
-Other misc. onsite/phone user support.

- LSC website: Most time was spent setting up an online registration
processing application. Finished setup of the frontend and made
adjustments according to requests from the meeting's organizers. Conducted
extensive negotiations with the MIT ecommerce department on configuring
and fine-tuning our 'store.' The form is installed and the store is now in
production. The configuring/fine-tuning are ongoing as new options are
being identified during actual use. Ongoing user support on security
issues of the online application. Educating the users how the online
transaction works and that it is indeed secure, but discussed alternatives
with Larry in case the users are not convinced. Working with MIT LIGO on
posting updates to other parts of the website (it's about more than registering :)
Posted updates to the LIGO Results page. Working on updating the
employment page.
- LIGO website: Worked with George Stokes and DCC on issues related to
upgrading the DCC applications. We had to halt the server over the weekend
to run a test installation of the new system. During the downtime George
has identified a few items that needed further attention. Working my way
through documentation on the new system. Assisted George in testing the
setup.
Posted updates to Internal b/board and other pages. Posted
late-arrival presentations for Aspen. Updated the roster database.
- CaJAGWR website: Videotaped a talk by Benjamin Owen. Captured/compressed
the footage for streaming, it's ready to be posted. Updated the
website. Provided user support.
- Projest Science: Started working on the website for the upcoming workshop.

-Spent time going over a number of contracts. Resolved contract issues with SUN.
Still have a number of items to check on; CISCO has not sent anything on the
contract renewal from over a month ago, Caltech needs a new SUN listing, date
confirmations needed from Foundry.
-Continue working on various documentation assignments. The one taking top
priority is the revamp of the security plan.
-Still setting up a new print server. After updating the drivers to the latest
versions the changes needed to have minimal inpact on the users so they can use
the new printers is now possible. About 10 configuration files need to be
modified and a few more added before everything is wrapped up.
-Assisted a number of users with their Acrobat reader program. Mike will be
upgrading the PC's to version 6 and we are looking at doing the same for the
UNIX side of the house.
-Assisted Lisa with a number of e-mail items. Mostly, cleaning a few things up
and contributing to the spam filter list.
-Assisting a number of people on the logistics of the different conferences
coming up. Covering web pages, networking, projectors and table layouts.
-Assisted the DCC on a few items.
-The general user assistance. Setting up new accounts and modifying existing ones.

Advanced LIGO and Supporting R&D (Shoemaker)

Seismic Isolation

From: Larry Jones <ljones@ligo.caltech.edu>

Advanced LIGO Seismic Structure

SEI Structure:

Some responses and questions are being generated on the issues for modifying the Design Requirements for the BSC structure. However, other priorities within LIGO are seriously limiting our responsiveness as a team, and additional contract costs are likely being incurred. Our goal is to release Revision A of the E030179 Design Requirements document for the BSC structure on 5/21.

The Design Review meeting for the BSC structure is now scheduled for June 4, 2004; this may again be delayed, due to our slowness in firming the modifications to the Design Requirements. Delivery at LASTI of the BSC prototype is expected to be in November, 2004.

Actuators:

We're working with a wire manufacturer in NC to have the actuator mag wires processed in their ultrasonic wire cleaner prior to bobbing winding; a quote is expected soon. PSI has identified a high temperature epoxy as a candidate potting material for the bobbin termination area, and a sample has been received. R Taylor will make specimen coupons for RGA qualification testing at LHO. Significant improvements in RGA sensitivity and chamber background cleanliness in the 40 m lab have been demonstrated in recent scans.

Displacement Sensors:

Jay is getting an updated quote from ADE.

Seismometers:

Nothing new.

Galling/Dusting Test:

Further progress was made on preparing Figures for the report.

Suspension

From: Janeen Romie <romie_j@ligo.caltech.edu>

AdLIGO Suspensions
MC to LASTI in June
Continuing to coordinate with many key folks on preparing for the mode cleaner triple suspension to go to LASTI in June. Laurent Ruet from MIT is here for this week and next supporting the assembly and damping work of the mode cleaner. We welcome him here at Caltech and thank him for his participation. He's been updating the assembly specification. He's working with Calum and Helena this week and will work with Mark Barton next week. Work is on schedule.

Jay Heefner is planning on installing the mode cleaner's electronics at LASTI June 9 & 10. Jay will work with Laurent and Dave O. Our plan is to send the suspenson and associated parts to LASTI on June 1st, for arrival June 4th. Mark and others will go to MIT to support the re-assembly and installation work sometime soon after June 10th.

The LIGO 1 global control osems are finished with their vacuum bake and ready for assembly into the suspension. Bob Taylor reports that the hybrid osems will go into a vacuum bake oven today or tomorrow for use on Monday. We can use the thoroughly cleaned anodized aluminum hybrid osems for damping experiments in the meantime, if required. Helena picked up the balance of the hybrid osem coils from Corona Magnetics. They are with Bob Taylor for assembly.

Quad Work
We thank Russell Jones from the University of Glasgow for visiting us last week. Also, Norna Robertson joined us on Thursday, May 13th, which was greatly appreciated. Our primary goal was to work on the design of the quad catcher. To facilitate this, we performed four experiments in the lab. Two experiments were using the GEO mode cleaner catcher and associated metal masses for a double pendulum and the other two experiments involved a double pendulum with 40kg metal masses. The ergonomics of handling the 40kg masses also came into play. We also practiced an installation of the wooden quad concept structure onto the faux optical table on top of the suspension gazebo. The week was quite a success in that we have a clear concept of what's required in the next few months. Calum, Russell and I are working on a summary of the lessons learned and the open issues. We hope to provide a briefer summary in the suspension meeting next week.

Output Mode Cleaner
Dennis Coyne asked the Caltech suspension team to work up a concept to damp the output mode cleaner. Calum and I met with Peter Fritschel and Peter King to work out the particulars. Calum has worked up a concept for a double pendulum suspension for the output mode cleaner, based on a GEO design, and transfered the assumed parameters to Mark. Calum is working on a maraging steel blade design that will meet the requirements. Mark is working on modeling the double pendulum in Mathematica. We hope to have results to pass by the Peters and others by Monday. Our goal is to have a design and drawings completed by the end of June, fabrication of parts along with assembly and testing of the suspension by the end of July and ready for installation by the end of August.

Core Optics

From: Bill Kells <kells@ligo.caltech.edu>

This week we have obtained some new results on sapphire sample bulk absorption (as posted by Liyuan Z). I've started to also measure the OPD through these same samples to derteermine whether there is any correlation between the sharp absoption anomalies and OPD inhomogeneity.
