LIGO Weekly Site Telecon (Lindquist)

There was no site teleconference on Thursday, September 6, 2001.

The budget to be sent to the NSF so that they can release funds for FY 2002 has been approved internally and entered into FastLane.  We are waiting for the MIT proposal, which is to be attached.  Meanwhile, Florence has prepared a report for the FY 2001 Operations costs for the end of August.  The projected carry-forward is dwindling.  I propose an early review (Monday, September 10 Executive Committee Meeting).

The list of current actions revised to reflect the status of open actions assigned through August 30, 2001 may be found at ACTION LIST.

LIGO Hanford Observatory (LHO) Operations (Raab)

All electronics are down in the LVEA as we bake the room to 100F to
clear water from the chambers. We are working on a veriety of background
tasks that do not require the LVEA or could not be done because of their
impact on commissioning. Nothing really noteworthy in the mix.

LIGO Livingston Observatory (LLO) Operations (Coles)

Detector: Optics and Installation: Installation of the hardware for the
Laser Safety Interlock system began this morning. We will also install
additional cameras at each end station, as suggested in the LHO proposal.
Assembled a jig to calibrate and aligning wave front sensors off the ISC
tables, using the Modulated 980 nm RF Detector Test Laser. Peter King and I
began the calibration this afternoon. (Jonathan Kern)

LDAS: LDAS:  Updated all of the passwords at LLO.  Uploaded Big Brother to
ldas-sw and working the last of the bugs out of it.  I will have to
write a script to check the initial configuration and directory
structure the first time big brother is run at an individual site.
Spent some time working on paper work from my trip a couple weeks ago.
I noticed a couple of problems on controlmon last night, and will
contact Al about it this afternoon. (Shannon Roddy)

GC; Nothing to report

CDS: Nothing to report

PEM: Built four single pin to four pin LEMO cables and connected the coil monitor
outputs of the four face coils of each test mass to the Daq chassis. ITMY, ITMX,
and ETMY are using the designated coil channels while ETMX is using a temporary
channel setup.

Discovered the problem with the microphone power supplies waiting for spare
parts before beginning repairs.

Added more content to the PEM reference web pages (not posted yet). (Doug Lormand

Discovered that Sponsored Research hadn’t submitted Albert’s proposal before the due date despite our frantic efforts last week to get everything ready for them to push the button in a timely manner.

1.1 LHO INSTALLATION & COMMISSIONING

2km Commissioning

Commissioning at LHO is largely on hold while the LVEA undergoes a 100 F "bakeout" in an effort to get the water pressure low enough that we can leave the arms open all the time.

Luca Matone
I've begun writing a technical note on the LSC charaterization work done so far.  I've prepared a talk for the e2e meeting on the LSC charaterization effort.

1.2LLO INSTALLATION & COMMISSIONING

4 km Commissioning

Rai Weiss reporting
As was reported last week, the alignment of the arm cavities was found to be excellent. A steering mirror after the expansion telescope used to bring the transmitted beam to the photodetector was found to be misaligned. The transmitted beam missed passing through the viewport by a few centimeters. In an operation lasting no more than 1/2 hour at atmospheric pressure, the viewport was changed to a larger diameter. The low humidity of the backfill air and the short exposure time made it so that the system recovered to the 10^-8 torr range within 24 hours. It is possible to make a fast change in the vacuum and not suffer a long water pumpdown.

While the Y arm cavity was in resonance, the Q of the bullet mode of the ETMY was remeasured and found to be about 7x10^5 rather than 7000 as had been previously reported. The suspicion is that the earlier measurements had not been on the bullet mode resonance.

Work is in progress to bring the mode cleaner wavefront sensors into operation.

The new PSL servo boards have been installed and the system is being tested.

The mode cleaner was leveled and the contribution to the frequency noise from the vertical oscillations of the mirrors was reduced by about a factor of 30. The excitation pattern was also simplified to involve only one vertical oscillation frequency.

2.0 OtherEngineering and Scientific Activities

2.1 Design/Analysis/Fab

Core Optics

GariLynn Billingsley
CSIRO has begun work repolishing BS02 and polishing BS06.  BS02 has been repolished once before because of a coating run gone bad, so it may come in 0.04mm undersize in thickness.  CSIRO will try to keep it within spec.  Rather than scrap a very expensive piece of glass we have decided to go ahead with the repolish.

Optical modeling

Bill Kells
Since returning from LHO, I've been attending to some papers in progress:
Amaldi
Core optics (Jordan)
40m Recycling
MELODY paper (Beausoleil)
Also have completed a re-analysis of the putative  parametricinstability of Braginsky, et al.

Suspensions

Janeen Romie
Working on 40m TM suspension design.

IOO PERISCOPE

Mike Smith, Ken Mailand, Mark Barton
Tests are continuing. We have been trying to identify a resonance at 126 Hz and one at 175 Hz. Our latest results indicate that these may be due to the particular table on which the periscope is being tested.

PSL

Peter King
I spent some time characterizing a few RF photodetectors, nominally built as 21.5 MHz and 35.5 MHz.  Found that there was an error in the components, as the labelled 35.5 MHz photodetector could not be tuned to that frequency.

In a related problem, the GAP2000 InGaAs photodiodes ordered have a higher capacitance than the EG&G C30642G.  In the RF photodetector circuit these could not be tuned to 35.5 MHz with the available components.  As a result, some of the 21.5 MHz photodetectors have the GAP2000 photodiodes installed and the 35.5 MHz photodetectors have the C30642G installed.

The PZT holders for the pre-modecleaner have been re-made.  They are currently being baked in the small vacuum-chamber bake oven in the PSL Lab.

Currently short two RFPDs and one PMC -- further detail provided by Sander.

We have completed a PMC re-layout and submitted it for fab.  We are expecting new boards from the vendor early next week.

GEO/LASTI/CAmpus Spares

Work continues on the kitting/stuffing of the these spares. No major issues.
Sander Liu
Shipped one each of the following: PMC Reference, PMC Servo, FSS Reference, FSS Servo and one 80 MHz VCO to LLO.

Fixed and tuned two each of the 21.5 MHZ and 35.5 MHz RFPD. Once the mistake in the housing has been corrected, they will be packaged and shipped to LHO and LLO respectively.

Working on a preliminary draft for the RFPD testing procedure.

40 Meter Interferometer (Weinstein)

Thermal Noise Interferometer (Libbrecht)

This week we have been working on bringing our second arm cavity into
operation.  Of the four OSEM controllers we have for our test masses, only
two have broadband inputs for actuating on the mirrors.  For our previous
work, both of these were used on the north cavity, leaving the south cavity
without actuation.  This week we restored the south cavity's output-mirror
controller, allowing us to actuate on it, and we verified that the north
cavity still locks with its input controller replaced.  We have also
verified that we can remove the pzt feedaround servo after lock
acquisition, leaving the north cavity locked using only mirror feedback and
freeing the pzt servo for use in the south cavity.

Data Analysis and Computing (Lazzarini)

Simulation and Modeling (Bhawal)

E2E Physics Meeting
-------------------
Luca Matone discussed his recent work on characterization and modeling of the
Length Sensing and Control (LSC) system. After that, a short discussion followed
on issues for a realistic modeling of the mirror motion: measuring ground
motion correlation and modeling the correlation or using the measured data
stream.

Mode mismatch
-------------
(Biplab & Hiro) We are trying to understand some crucial issues related to
the cavity resonance conditions especially when a mode-mismatched beam enters
a cavity and we are performing some consistency checks regarding handling of gouy phase in
cases of mirror reflections and base changes.

LSC Characterization
--------------------
(Luca) began writing a technical note on the LSC characterization work done so
far.

Alfi
----
(Bruce)
- Continuing implementation of Alfi box and primitive file parser for Alfi5.
- Added ALFINode tree for tracking container hierarchy of nodes.

(Melody)
- Continuing on implementation of graphics portion of alfi5. Worked on
window and menu components this week.  Also investigated on possible
graphics format to display the primitives.

LIGO Data Analysis System

Software Systems (Blackburn)

The LDAS version (0.0.20) for the Burst and Stochastic MDC was release
on Friday of last week. It was installed on the LDAS development, test,
MIT, LHO and LLO systems.

The Burst & Stochastic MDC is currently underway at MIT. New versions
of LAL and LALwrapper are being installed at a rate of about twice a
day in support of the rapid development of that code base. So far this
has work out very well with the management of these code bases handled
at CIT and then pushed to MIT and the sites. LDAS staff at MIT for this
MDC have assisted with LAL and LALwrapper code development and with the
writing of test scripts and documentation for the MDC.

A couple of issues have shown up with the LDAS code during the MDC. They
have mostly been associated with the metaDataAPI and the database. All of
these issues have been resolved and patches have been incorporated into
the running systems of LDAS. There was a small issue with the mpiAPI and
the eventMonitorAPI. These were also fixed.

A need for a "search" column in the sngl_burst table similar to the
"search" in the sngl_inspiral table was identified and changes to the
test databases on the LDAS development and MIT systems have been made
to support the MDC.

Work is underway to establish a single CPU version of LDAS capable of
running full wrapperAPI jobs is underway. This is a mode of running
LDAS that has been requested at both the LSC meeting in Hanford and
here at the MDC at MIT.

Caltech
-------
(Dan Kozak)

Lots of HPSS handholding--constant tape repacking, bad tapes needing
recovery.

Most of the week QFS testing was on hold while we acquired extensions
to our eval licenses.  Once these arrived we were up and running
again.

Testing of the "big rig" QFS system continues, with the aggregate
performance of multiple writing processes being good in terms of
bandwidth, but highly unstable (i.e. individual processes vary
_greatly_ in performance).  I'm going to try larger writes (i.e. larger
than 8 second frame sized files) and test reader performance.  LSC's
response to my questions about performance was basically "it depends"
so I'll pursue getting a better answer from them.

LSC's response to my question about the "blackout" of access to the QFS
while one of the shared reader or writer was rebooted was that this was
to be expected, but the more detailed questions (i.e. will the blackout
be longer with more T3s and that kind of thing) were being referred to
others within the LSC organization.

(Al Wilson)

m71 still crashing. and is notsimply  a logout condition as was the case before I lowered the
screen resolution. This is a full kernel crash (i.e., it locks up the system). I have
rebuilt the kernel (2.4.6) and might try 2.4.9 to see if it helps. Starting to looking like hardware.

All ldas systems have the new passwords.

The ldas-test system was used to refine the systemimagers program. Found
some helpful hints that will make the process go a bit smoother. Will
update the html doc. Also will incorporate the info from Mendell (LHO) and Roddy (LLO).

(Stuart Anderson)

Re-wrote the LDAS rsync script for added functionality to support
internal LDAS Beowulf mirrors, mirroring directly between two sites
without referencing the main LDAS software server, and supporting
the new LDAS MIT system.

General release of rsync server on ldas-sw for mirroring the /ldcg
software to non-laboratory computers.

contact Al about it this afternoon.

Hanford
-------
(Greg Mendell)

1) Continued work on the known pulsar search code DS0.  I am currently
incorporating calls to the LALDemod function into the code, to stitch
together short time baseline FFTs into coherent longer time baseline
FFTs.

2) Started testing backups of the file systems on the LDAS LHO network;
this had been put on the back burner since last June.

3) Set up a spare Sun Ultra 10 as sunbox1 on the LHO LDAS network.  This
box will be used for testing scripts for installing LDAS Sun boxes using
cfdef, and verifying backups are working using ufsdump and ufsrestore.

4) Worked with Dave Barker to get a fiber channel connection between fb3
(the new framebuilder) and the Sun T3 disk farm.

Data Analysis Activities
Vicere':
* I am estimating the effect of power line noise on the signal
correlation Livingston and Hanford detectors, in an attempt
to evaluate the effect of frequency fluctuations on the broadband
noise floor. This is work in progress.

General Computing (Wallace)

MIT:
(Keith)
-Setup equipment and accounts for the MDC
-Reworked a number of computers both hardware and software.
-Setup items for E2E.
-Working on network performance issues.
-Setup wireless network.
-Installed new s/w pkgs. on various machines.
-Setup printer services and fixed a few printer problems.
-Regular user support and purchases.

Livingston:
(Tom)
-Still working on the second T1 line installation. LSU is having to
work through a number of logistical issues.
-Setting up a new server and working on the in-house built disk storage
unit with Shannon.
-The usual work of setting up accounts and regular maintenance.

Hanford:
(Christine)
- After a failed attempt to swap our file server to a new computer on
Monday, I hope to get the swap done Thursday, 9/6.  I am not copying
over old application software and in-fact the new file server will only
serve the home accounts and will not have any application software on
it.  This may cause a problem for some people who maybe used some of the
old application software or maybe were accustomed to logging in to
rainier to run applications.  I will send out a list of other computers
that are available at LHO.  If application software is missing, please
let know what is needed and I will install the latest version on our
application server.
- Trying to get as much Sys. Admin. stuff done this week as I can in
preparation for spending next week as a Control Room Operator and
working from 1 to 9 p.m.  I will not be available for Sys. Admin.
(except emergencies) during my operator support next week.

CIT:
(Mike)
-Running various tests with VRVS software we seem to have this program up
and running.  The fix for 'vic.exe' and 'runtime errors' is as follows I
ended up downloading a third party software called unload.exe which is up
on Sirius in the pcapps directory; to kill the VRVS mbone video process
look for AVICAP.DLL then used the unload button to kill this process, you
then have to reboot the computer.
-I'm finishing up with the step-by-step instructions for VRVS registered
user webpage to connect to a scheduled conference, on request by Albert,
which he implied that I make some modifications and additional information.
-The external tape drive is now working on Donna's PC there was a problem with
 USB port.
-I upgraded ANSYS licensing server and users everything seems to be working
fine.
-Loaded some General computing software on a new PC that was purchased for
the west bridge 3rd floor conference room, and added additional hardware
for video conferencing.

(Lisa)
- Finally got cdssol8 (ultra10) finished with its rebuild and back over to
wilson house.
- cdssol20 (blade1000) was throwing up kernel notices.  I ran MU5 on it and told
Rolf to let me know if it barfs again.
- Re-did the mount points in the 40meter again.  Added a 75G IDE hard drive to
op140m (blade100) for /cvs/cds.  That is now automounted out to all unix boxes
on the 40m martian network.
- Created a configuration CD for the 40meter martian PCs.  This was not a big
deal, but it has jetadmin, sftp, ssh and a hosts file so that these things are
handy whenever they put up a new pc.  Mick and I are working on a configuration
CD for the unix boxes as well.
-Configured the gateway blade100 for the bdl.
- Regular round of accounts and aliases maintenance.

(Mick)
-Installed ssh on gemma (new Blade 100)
-With Lisa, took cdssol8 to Wilson, brought up and configured network
interface
-Worked with Mike on VRVS remote camera control
-JetAdmin on 40m PC
-With Lisa, installed new 70 Gb hard drive on op140m; also configured mount
points for new drive (/cvs/cds) on all 40m machines
-With Lisa, installed Fast Ethernet and reflexive memory card on 40m Ultra
10
-Made and ran Ethernet cable in the 40m
-Continued working on inventory information for database

(Larry)
-Spent some time working on the last maintenance update for the SUN
equipment. The Blade 1000 units take about 2 hours for the upgrade and
the Ultra 10's around 4 hours. It will be some time before we get this
latest update installed on all of the workstations.
-Received a number of purchases and started installing the new computers
and related equipment.
-The PC on the 3rd Floor of WestBridge has been getting more usage. Performed
some regular maintenance tasks. So far most people have not played with the
settings on the unit so we have not had any real major problems with it.
-Spent a deal of time working with Mike on the VRVS installation. Most of
the s/w issues have been worked out. A number of the problems were the result
of things changing(hardware being moved, cables being removed) after things
were up and working. The two test units that have been stationary and not
have had any changes have been running with very few problems.
-Checking on the costs to have single mode fiber runs done for the 40M and
Wilson house in-order to get a GIGE backbone going for the LIGO-CIT net.
-Met with Foundry systems to see what they want to charge us for their equipment
for the GIGE backbone.
-Solved a couple of printer issues. One problem with the color printers is that there
are formats that they can't handle and it asks to recycle the power to clear out
the problem. Just turning off the printer doesn't clear out the prolbem, it needs
to be unplugged from the power source and then the error will clear out of
memory.
-Working on some e-mail configuration issues.

(Barbara)
- Continued efforts on the new LIGO roster.  Made changes for printability
and other formatting changes.
- Continued efforts on Access form to add a costbook line item.  Resolved
problem with missing object types.
- Reviewed the Kamionkowski video.
- Fixed small problems with LSC roster and DCC number reservation tool.

Report from the GriPhyN LIGO Applications Group (CIT, ISI, UWM):

I.  Talks and Publications

UWM Reports:

"LIGO Data Analysis on the Grid: The Grid Physics Network (GriPhyN)",
at the LSC meeting in Hanford, WA, August 13-16, 2001. This was an
overview of the LIGO-GriPhyN efforts and in particular the prototype
being developed for SC2001, and was presented during one of the ASIS
sessions.

"CondorG Academy", at NCSA in Champaign-Urbana, August 27, 2001. This
was a full-day workshop I presented along with 2 people from the
UW-Madison Condor group. Although the presentations were not GriPhyN
centric, because CondorG is part of the VDT and because GriPhyN
scientists are expected to be DTF users I mention it. During the
presentations a number of references were made to the GriPhyN project.

II.  Tool Development and Software Changes

UWM Reports:

I have made two trips to UW-Madison to work with the Condor team and
have provided input on Condor DAGman.

II.  Testbed Activities

ISI Reports:

XML/Request Manager interface:
We are able to take the XML request sent by Roy to our web server either
via a web page or through the command line interface and can write the
XML  in a file at the web server end, parse the xml using a perl parser
XML:PARSER built around the Expat C parser. The parser currently returns
the o/p in name value pairs and stores them in an o/p file. This will be
changed to be given as a command instead, to the Request manager.

Currently instead the o/p is shown back as name value pairs of the given
XML back to either the web browser or the command client stdout.

Authentication : Installation of My-proxy is currently in progress

Replica Catalog :
Up and running on ldap://dc-user.isi.edu:9129. Need to populate the
replica catalog with files and the organization of the replica has to be
decided.

Condor-G :
Installed and tested Condor-G with dummy jobs with a Gram gatekeeper on
Jupiter.isi.edu.  Test was done by doing condor_submit  of a single
script file and also by constructing a diamond dag and creating 4 scripts
and using condor_submit_dag to submit the dag to the dagman and execute
it on Jupiter. (Tests were successful.)

An apache web-server is working on dc-user.isi.edu.

Have tried doing the same with dataserver.phys.uwm.edu but have not been
able to make it work as of yesterday. (Need to spend some time on it with
Scott on Monday.)

Caltech Reports:

The ISI, Milwaukee, and Caltech groups have been collaborating extensively
to devise and implement an end-to-end Virtual Data system for LIGO data,
whihc we hope to demonstrate at the SC01 convention in Denver in November.

For LIGO, the use of Globus provides both security and wide-area data
distribution. Each invocation of LDAS (LIGO Data Analysis System) will
communicate to the world only through two interfaces:
-- a Globus job manager (aka GRAM server), and
-- a Globus data port (aka GridFTP server)

There is a Request Manager module under construction at ISI that receives
Virtual Data requests, and decides which LDAS installation should run to
complete the request, which data should be used as input, and where the
output should go. Input data is moved to the local disk of a LDAS instance
via the data port, the LDAS job is constructed and sent via the Globus
gatekeeper, and the output moved from local disk to where it should be on
the Grid. The request manager uses the Condor system to schedule and execute
these actions.

The request received by the request manager may be on that has been recently
answered, in which case it may be stored in the cache (aka replica catalog)
of the manager. In this case, no LDAS is used, but the replica data is
fetched to answer the request.

There is an XML-formatted virtual data request document, using the LIGO-LW
(LIGO lightweight data) specification. This specification has been agreed by
the collaboration, and tools have been built to both create such requests
from a client-side form on a web browser, and also to parse and implement
such requests on the request manager.

UWM Reports:

As part of the GriPhyN-LIGO prototype work being done in preparation
for SC2001 I have begun building and installing a GridFTP (gsi-wuftpd)
server on ldas-test.ligo.caltech.edu. In addition I have installed a
version of LDAS locally in Milwaukee so that I can begin working on a
GRAM jobmanager for LDAS.

Locally in Milwaukee I have setup the machine dataserver.phys.uwm.edu
with a Globus gatekeeper, GridFTP server, and GSI-enabled SSH server.
In addition I have installed, configured, and tested Condor version
6.3.0 on the UWM Linux cluster, as well as the UWM Alpha cluster.

I have also put together a package named LDR (Ligo Data Replicator),
which is being used locally at UWM to replicate data from the CACR
HPSS to UWM.

LIGO II/Advanced R&D (Sanders)

From Peter King:

2.3 Advanced LIGO PSL
The boards originally designated as being for GEO were re-directed
to being site spares.  It is expected that replacements will be available
(fabricated, debugged and tested) by October.

From Mark Barton:

This week I did various calculations for the Advanced LIGO suspension
requirements, learning about the Mathematica package Optica in the
process.

From: GariLynn Billingsley <Billingsley_G@ligo.caltech.edu>

Goodrich has started the compensation polish on the 25 cm sapphire substrate.  They are shipping the 15 cm substrate back to Caltech.  This piece was used to calibrate the material removal rate of m-axis sapphire.  The estimated time to completion is 2 months.

From: Helena Armandula <ahelena@ligo.caltech.edu>
Silicate Bonding:

Performed a few more tests confirming that baked sodium silicate bonds between sapphire and silica are very strong, even when there is marked evidence of stress.

Tested in tension some old bonds made with KOH solution.
As before, even after they aged for ~ 109 days, these bonds were very weak.

A surprising result (to me) from tests that involved sapphire substrates is that they are very sensitive to thermal shock.
Much more sensitive than fused silica.

Riccardo back  from Pisa to Pasadena,  Francesco back from Pasadena to
Pisa, (thanks for running the group for me, I appreciated Ric), Florian
back from Hongo in Pasadena, Alessandro back from Hongo, in vacation in
Mexico, going back to Pisa.

Akiteru
the preparation for the mirror control is going well. We have
installed the suspension, on which Florian and Yukiyoshi have been
working,
into the other tower and preparing electronics for the measurement. The
measurements should be done by middle of September.
In the mean while, I am trying to test new control scheme for the
inverted
pendulum. Mounting an accelerometer on it for monitoring completely
changed
the IP eigen modes. Then redoing diagonalization process, which takes
quite
bit of time. But we should be able to test the feed forward technique by
the
second week of the next month.
