LLO and LHO presented their latest laser safety interlock system details for review and approval at a telecon on Friday, 27 July. Although the two proposed systems are essentially the same functionally, a "common buy" (same vendor) for both sites was not recommended because of potentially higher costs, possible local contractor/labor issues and longer procurement lead times. Questions of potential impacts to the commissioning schedule due to the interlock system installation work were also considered. Each site was asked to submit to G. Sanders a statement regard possible impacts to their commissioning work and installation of the laser interlock system. LLO suggested that they could start interlock system installation at this time since they would be in pump down mode for the next 30 days. LLO was given the go ahead to start system installation now, as long as there was no interference with commissioning work. LHO will update their system proposal as needed and propose a possible (later?) installation start date. Note, the laser safety action item is still not closed since there are other laser safety actions assigned that have not yet been addressed.
The conference room (ECR, SCR and LSR) projector work will begin next week. Although we will attempt to work around scheduled meetings, there may be times when a conference room is not available to "walk-on" use. Please check with Elizabeth Wood if you need a conference room.
The date for the LHO Safety Audit is 19 September, 2001.
General Items:
--------------
(F. Raab)
WA4K is pumping, following repairs. WA2K appears to be locking well
again after fix
of deteriorating analog SUS controller board and implementation of
a WFS differential
pitch and yaw servo at anitsymmetric port. We suspect our common-mode
tidal feed forward
actuation has overcorrected tides by approximately a factor of two;
we continue working
to hit tune right before or during E5.
Nathan Hindman joined the operating staff this week. I have submitted
below a report from
last week (that did not get passed on when I was overcome by events)
in addition to this week's report.
4k Input-Output Optics work
---------------------------
(Corey Gray, Gerardo Moreno, Betsy Weaver, and others)
Our ulitmate goal: match LOS alignment work (utilizing COS laser) with
IOO aligmnent work (utilizing PSL laser), close up system, and begin pump
down.
The MC is back to flashing, but stability is hard to maintain with doors
off and purge air on.
For the LOS alignment, a beam was sent "back" through the RM, off of
MMT3 and checked on MMT2. Pitch was fairly close, but we were off a bit
in yaw. The beam pointing was corrected by adjusting MMT3 Yaw bias from
-0.88 to +0.89. For IOO alignment, the Mode Cleaner was aligned, and the
expanded and faint beam from the PSL was pointed onto MMT3 via MMT2.
The precision to which this beam was steered onto MMT3 was fairly rough
- it is centered to within an inch or so. This beam is very low visability
because of how expanded it is, so we've never done much better than this
during any of our past alignments. A few exit checks were made this
morning, and currently, the doors are being re-installed for a pumpdown
possibly later today.
4k Input-Output Optics work (FOR WEEK ENDING 7/26/01)
-----------------------------------------------------
(Mark Barton, Corey Gray, Richard McCarthy, Gerardo Moreno, Josh Myers,
David Ottaway, Hugh Radkins, Bartie Rivera, Kyle Ryan, Betsy Weaver, Stan
Whitcomb)
Mode Cleaner(MC) and Mode Matching Telescope(MMT) alignment was a major
task on the 4k. After some tweaking by Betsy & Mark (MC3 had to be
slightly "rotated" within it's wire sling, and the OSEMs were tightened
down more), MC3 & MMT1 were given a clean bill of health and re-installed
into HAM1. The alignment of the Mode Cleaner was then checked. Miraculously,
it looks as though the re-installation of MC3 is good; our previous experience
showed a "twisting" of a tower was required at least once to insure an
acceptable yaw bias. Once the Mode Cleaner was seen to be aligned, the
Steering Mirror, MMT1, & MMT2, were checked. After a few minutes of
searching we found a beam on MMT2, ensuring us that MMT1 was re-installed
well (and no "tower twist" was required).
When we were happy w/ our alignment, the eastern door of HAM1 was re-installed
and IOT1 was re-positioned and aligned to the MC output beams.
This week, we also moved the MC2 tower in the +X direction 6.65mm in
order to lengthen the MC cavity to a more acceptable length (MC2 was originally
placed wrong through miscommunications of what the length should be).
We are now waiting for a beam through the Recyling Mirror to MMT3, which
we will align MMT2.
Detector: Optics and Installation: OSEM replacement and realignment of the LLO 4k was completed on Monday. Gary and Harry found a single bad OSEM at the X-end, just before we closed last Friday. It was replaced Monday and everything is under vacuum now. Vertex pressure is below 10^-4 and high-voltage is back on the core optics. The Michelson has been roughly aligned and we see no evidence of the clipping that previously existed in the Faradays. All beams exiting HAM-1 have been checked for clearance at the viewports and have been judged satisfactory. A PO is being processed to install the engineering controls for the Laser Safety Interlock system; material has been ordered and cable installation in the vertex should begin next week. (Jonathan Kern)
We are commissioning the mode cleaner and the recycled Michelson once again. We are proceeding with a series of measurements on characterizing the mode cleaner. These include the mode cleaner length (12.252176 m) and cavity pole(4796 Hz). The mode cleaner test mass Q's were found to be low (between 70,000 and 300,000 instead of 350,000 to 600,000). The reason for this is not presently understood. We now have 1 Watt of power going into the mode cleaner with a stable lock. (Kovalik, Coles)
Investigated depolarization in a half-wave plate, which degrades the
isolation efficiency of a Faraday isolator when the half-wave plate is
used as part of the Faraday isolator. The investigation indicates that
the depolarization is caused by misalignment between the component plates
(misalignment in the orientations of the component plates) that the half-wave
plate consists of. Based on this hypothesis and taking into account thermally
induced depolarization in a Faraday rotator (i.e.,
thermal depolarization in the TGG crystal), calculated the degradation
in isolation efficiency due to the depolarization in half-wave plate. It
has been found that the isolation efficiency can be degraded as much as
two orders of magnitude. The result shows reasonable agreement with experiment.
Helped Homer and David with their absorption measurement in a sapphire
sample. (Sany Yoshida)
CDS Frame Builder internal disk crashed last week. Also found that one
more disk on the D1000 external disk array was bad. Got replacements for
the disks from
Hanford and replaced the disks. Also backed up the trend-frames and
the minute-trend-frames on tape. Ordered 10 backup tapes for emergency
backup
situations. ASC Front End's Pentek #4 in the LVEA is bad. We had two
spares of the Pentek sent to us from Caltech, which we will replace as
soon as we find a window to stop the asc. Looking for vendors to procure
the spare SCSI hard disks for the frame builder and the D1000 disk array.Diagnosed
the problem with the Mode Cleaner Wave Front Sensor segment readback. Op-amps
in the Demod board needs to be changed. Installing ghostscript and gv on
the control room machines. (Chethan Parameswariah)
General Computing: We have received our two Blade 1000s for General Computing. One is set up in the Computer User's Room for general use, and the second is going to become our file server. The first will primarily be a backup for the new file server, but will be available for general use as long as the file server is operational.
We have been discussing the second T1 line with LSU. Bell South has installed the line, and LSU will be here next week to install the routing equipment. LSU is getting specifications on the permanent routing equipment we need to purchase, and they will be installing loaner equipment next week. The second line should be operational by the end of next week, but there may still be some configuration changes after that as we get our permanent equipment.
PEM: Finished preparations for the E5 run. Replaced the LVEA
seismometer with the spare seismometer for the E5 run. The LVEA seismometer
produces a
peak at about 100 Hz which seems to be a property of that seismometer
only. It's possible that the seismometer's masses need to be recentered
or that the seismometer is defective. Either way we will have a working
seismometer for the run.Reconnected the voltage monitors in the LVEA and
the X-end. Reinstalled the microphones at the X-end and Y-end stations.
Complied a list of all of the operating PEM sensors. This list is posted
to our web page. The link is http://www.ligola.caltech.edu/Operational_PEM.htm
Redesigned the LLO seismic reference web page, http://www.ligo-la.caltech.edu/PEM_Ref/seisref/seisref.htm

Despite achieving what seemed to be reasonable cavity-by-cavity alignments, the full ifo showed evidence of alignment drifts and thus would not lock. Several full alignments were attempted, resulting in good and stable alignment and yet the interferometer refused to lock for quite awhile (~an hour), in which time various gain combinations were tried. Finally the interferometer locked with low buildups in the arms cavity (~100). We tweaked alignment while in lock, ultimately raising the power buildup to ~400. It is interesting to note that stable locking 'turned on' without any apparent intervention on our part. WFS investigations proceeded (dithering of ETMs and measurement of transfer coefficients to WFS1).
However work on the WFS system (and commissioning in general) stopped when suspension failures plagued the 2km system. Spent a lot of time trying to get 2k vertex optics fully operational again. The ITMY radically changed alignment, and in fact ASC bias could not change the OPT lever indications. This was traced to a blown PA85 in the controller, with suspicion of some intermittant path to at least one coil (UR). Coincident with this fix, the FMx controller stopped damping. The FMx failure was traced to a blown fuse for the sattelite power. With this fixed the x spot was now returned to nominal at the AS port. However, coincident with this fix, the bias control of ITMY was now gone (similar in symptom with first today). This was traced to a blown fuse on the -24V supply At the same time that the fuse was replaced, the UR coil output was again railed. This was traced to an intermittent connection due to damage in a previous repair.
The wavefront sensor at the antisymmtric port (WFS1) and the one in reflection (WFS2A) were setup to feed back to differential ETM and RM, respectively.
- We attempted to install an additional new
RAID disk on the LHO system to
increase our online data time from 13 hours to 30
hours. However, it turns out
that the new drive (one of four recently received)
is not what we ordered and
does not work on Sun stations (all four must now be
retrieved from around the
country and shipped back). The only drive unit I have
on hand to send up now is
the D1000 that we use on our DAQS development system
at Caltech.
Besides affecting the LHO DAQ system, one of the RAID
units was shipped to LASTI
for their DMT and is now on its way back. Another
RAID was destined to be
installed on the new CDS server at LLO, so that installation
will be set back as
well.
- Worked on the ADCU timing issues at LHO (Marka's
code on DMT had noticed
that GPS ramp zero crossing on ADCU moved on system
reboots, often beyond system
timing requirement limits). The ADCU code has
been modified to check the ramp
zero crossing and attempt to bring itself within the
required timing window. We
are testing this at Caltech and on three ADCU at LHO.
In initial testing, it
appears that we can bring systems with the modified
clock driver modules (only
provide clock and trigger to ADC modules, not inter-module
synchronization
pulses) into closer time alignment than those using
the original clock driver
modules. We verified that even with the modified
modules, multiple ADC within a
VME crate remained synchronized to each other.
The DAQ controller code has also been modified
to relay the ramp offset times
to EPICS channels, such that they can be recorded
in trend frames (This code is
running only on our development system at present.
It will be moved to LHO after
E5).
30. The y end has been pumping for several weeks.
By August 2 the following had been established:
* all beams have been found: the mode cleaner reflected
and transmitted
beams, the Michelson symmetric and antisymmetric,
and the pick off beams
from the beam splitter and the input test mass. The
transmitted mode
cleaner beam is close to one edge of a viewport but
usable.
* All the masses in the LVEA are in their nominal
aligned positions with
small bias currents (the mode cleaner, the mode matching
telescope, the
recycling mirror, the beam splitter and the itms.
* the mode cleaner is aligned and locked and has sustained
1 watt of input
power
* the Michelson interferometer has been locked and
the recycling mirror
has been scanned to show recycling fringes.
The work in the oncoming week will concentrate on
measuring the
laser/mode cleaner system frequency and amplitude
noise and in bringing the optical levers into operation.
Peter King
I should be covered by the LLO general entry for this week, for work on getting the modecleaner up and running, re-aligning/positioning of IOT1
We received 10 new 1GHz Pentium VME processors last
week. These are destined
for digital suspensions, LSC upgrades and spares.
Unfortunately, once again,
VMIC improperly loaded the vxWorks boot kernel.
All have been returned to the
factory. It turns out these boards also require
a new vxWorks Board Support
Package (BSP), as they changed more than just the
CPU. We have this now,
compiled and ready to test once we get the processors back.
The free-space propagation of NPRO #170 was measured,
after being
repaired by Lightwave (for the second time in my memory).
Rick Karwoski, Paul Russell
Currently we are at MIT facility installing the LASTI PSL electronics.
As
of 10:00 a.m. EST, Thurs. the status is as follows:
- All hardware except for the laser power supply has
been in stalled in the PSl rack
- cross-connect panel has been installed
- All low voltage Power supplies have been connected
to the Euro-crate and are functioning
- Hi-voltage supplies are seated, and functioning.
- Hi-voltage connections to the PMC and Freq Servos
have been verified
- The IOC and associated VME modules are situated
in the VME crate
- Power has been applied to the VME crate.
- The VME crate has been booted and communication
has been established between the frame builder and the IOC.
- Approximately one-half of the internal field wiring
(IDC ribbon connections) have been made.
- PMC and Freq Servo RFPDs and the VCO are situated
on the optics table.
We will complete the internal field wiring and move
on to verify (EPICS-to-PSL
electronics) control signal continuity. We will endeavor
to install The
rack-to-table field wiring.
A Matlab model was created to reproduce the filtering
properties
measured on the LSC system. The chain includes the
Whitening,
Anti-Aliasing, Penteks (ADC/DAC) and the Anti-Imaging
boards.
The modeling of each board was created according to
the schematics. The
output of the model was then compared to the tf measurements
for an
(small) adjustment of the parameters. This was done
for the Whitening,
AA and AI boards. The agreement between the model
and the measured tf
(for each board) is < 0.5 dB in magnitude and <
2 deg in phase for
frequencies below 7kHz.
With this information, the time delay of the ADC/DAC
was infered from
the tf measurement between the Whitening and the Anti-Imaging
board.
This measurement was taken with different digital
filters enabled (often
none were enabled), with/without the AA on, with/without
the Whitening
filter enabled, and with different gains. Good agreement
was found
between the model and the measurement if you assume
an 80us time delay
between the input and output of the Pentek. The model
includes a fixed
stopband at ~6.7 kHz but it is still missing a second
stopband placed at
~9.5 kHz.
preparation for the E5 run. I have also written a
script that will compare
the data in about 1% of the frame files written by
the RDS writer to those
written by the framebuilder at the same time. I have
also started a
Histogram comparison monitor which I hope to ave running
before or during
E5.

E2E Weekly Physics meeting
------------------------------
Matt Evans talked about the derivation of the elements of the
lock
acquisition optical gain matrix, their relative significance,
method
of measuring those and how the lock acquisition is studied using
Han2k
etc....
Mode Mismatch
-------------
(Biplab) completed validation of mode-mismatch effects in recycling
cavity.
After sorting out a few initially-made mistakes in e2e runs and
in matlab
code that compares e2e results with analytical derivation, results
had
satisfactory matching with analytical approximation (upto 2nd
order) and
the good news is that no change (beyond a minus sign bug in convention
encountered during validation of 2-mir cavity) in e2e code was
needed.
Next step would be comparison with FFT and actual data to determine
if
calculations beyond 3rd order spatial modes would be necessary.
LSC modeling
------------
(Luca) A Matlab model was created to reproduce the filtering
properties
measured on the LSC system. More details are in the section of hardware.
Phase map
---------
(Hiro) The measured optics abberation will be included in e2e
using mode
decomposition matrices at each mirror. The measurement only covers
up to
15cm diameter, while the optics size is 25cm. I have started
to explore an
extrapolation method. One is :
(1) use zernike polynomial with normalization radius of 12.5cm
(2) apply Chi square fit to find the weight of each mode
(3) increase the number of modes until the rms or PV of the residual
variation become less than a given value
(4) characterize the rasidual variation - gaussian with smoothly
changing
sigma
(5) use the data within radius < 7cm, use the fit with radius
> 8cm and
use the region between to smoothly connect
those two.
Characterization of the lock time from kinematics
-------------------------------------------------
(Hiro) Based on the discussion with Matt and Biplab, I started
to
formulate the lock acquisition time from the seismic motion and
a blackbox
lock acquisition system which is characterized by a threshold
velocity (if
a mirror goes through a resonance point at a velocity slower
than this, a
lock is acquired).
Code development
----------------
(Hiro) low level programming of the simulation engine is still
going on,
e.g., the support of "bundle", to reduce the number of lines
in box files
to make it cleaner.
Documentation

LDAS Software Systems (Blackburn)
The eventmonAPI continues to be tested to convert multiDimData to frame.
Currently there is a limit of 4K+ 10 bytes (imposed by Unix command line limit) for the schema files used for passing parameters. With this limit, it has been decided to limit the value field in the process_param table which receives this data to this size. This means that there will be no need to split an entry over multiple rows in the table.
Documentation continues to be improved. Work has been done on FrameCPP.
The installation documentation for framecpp and cmonClient are now being
generated correctly. Also, bad hypertext links as noted in the problem
tracking system have been addressed and corrected on the development system.
A Tcl script is being written to automate the validation of html references.
The database web pages have been extended to have static web page for each
database to show the table columns.
The cmonClient was presented and reviewed by developers. Many issues were raised and work has started to resolve these issues. Once these changes are implemented, another presentation will be given.
Testing of multi-frame and multi-second frame files has revealed a need
for better documentation. Some tests succeeded while others failed.

LDAS Data Analysis (Anderson)
------------------
(Andrea Vicere)
I coded a program (a mathematica notebook) which computes the sensitivity
of a network of interferometric detectors to coalescing binaries events.
It includes the geometrical specifications for the various instruments
and
the design sensitivities, and allows to compute the SNR recovered by
the
network as a function of the source position in the sky and its orientation.
It also computes the matrices needed to combine signals from different
detectors into a coherent "network" signal.
I started to work in designing the code for analyzing data from the
LIGO-VIRGO PEM data exchange in search of events: this is work in progress.
(Greg Mendell)
Worked with my SURF student on gravity waves from the r-modes.
Worked on writing an LDAS DSO to run search code for known pulsars
using the LALDemod function.

Caltech

(Dan Kozak)
Attempted to rework the Solaris conv_lpd so that it would
work to convert printers.conf files to printcap format (which is what
it is advertised to do, but it doesn't work). The first attempt
didn't
produce a working printcap, but I'm still trying.
T3/QFS/UFS/NFS testing determined that unlinking 8 second
frame sized files on a QFS filesystem occurred at a rate of 71.6
unlinks/sec, which is quite close to the number for QFS+NFS (66.67).
Doing rename()s of 8 second frame sized files produced the following
results:
UFS direct: 140/sec
QFS direct: 102/sec
UFS/NFS: 39/sec
QFS/NFS: 38/sec
Earlier results suggested that UFS/NFS write performance might be
better (or at least more stable) when overwriting existing filenames
of
the same size, but this turned out not to be true to any great degree.
The range of overwrite performance is 12-24Mb/sec (as opposed to
10-26Mb/sec for creating new files).
(Al Wilson)
Most of the user desktop linux machines have been upgraded to RH7.1.
During this process we got control of the cfdef system. Most of the
def's files have there bugs worked out and now it is time to fine tune
it.
All of the ldas-dev Linux machines have been upgraded to RH7.1,
nodes included. (testing still needed to be done) The def files seem
to be
close to their final stages. The systemimager program worked! a few
minor
glitches (kernel not seeing the network card, getting DHCP to work
right,
etc) But this looks good for cloneing 100 nodes.
NCAR visit: Stuart Anderson and Albert Lazzarini visited NCAR to discuss
mass-storage technology
and seek wisdom from this group which
has been managing large amounts of data for many years.
Technical
points of interest:
Home grown HSM solution, "NCAR mass storage
system," for a highly
heterogeneous computing environment.
Approximately 50% of the storage resources are expended
in regularly
migrating data to new tape technology.
90% modeled and 10% experimental data.
Average file size is 30MB.
Redundant copy is stored on shelves with
a human tape loader
if requests are made.
Moving from Redwood to 9940 tape technology with no 9940
errors in
the first 6 months of operation of 10
drives.
Moving from HiPPI to Fiber Channel network.
Investigating using a large disk cache in front of the tape system.
LTO Ultrium drives manufactured today do not
have the reliability
for high duty cycle use.
STK visit: Stuart Anderson and Albert Lazzarini visited the STK facilities
in Louisville, CO to discuss 9840 and
9940 tape drive technology.
Technical points of interest:
9940A supports native Fiber Channel (arbitrated loop) at
60GB per cartridge and 10MB/s
native.
The next 2 generations of this drive where combined into
the 9940B which is due out
mid next year at 200GB per cartridge
and 30MB/s using the same media as today's version.
Further upgrades will involve a media replacement
and
long term projections are similar to other tape technologies,
i.e., DLT and LTO, which plan to put 1TB on a cartridge
around 2006.
The smallest tape library that supports the 9940
series is the L700.

for
LSC.
- Lots of activity with the SirCam virus arriving in emails.
We had
about 6 or 7 computers receive the e-mail with the virus, but only
one
that actually infected a PC. Norton had a fix for the virus which
worked well and saved having to do a rebuild on the one PC.
- The Sun Ultra 220R, Exabyte 215M tape robot, Sun D1000 disk array,
programmable UPS and KVM switch have all arrived for the complete
rebuild of the main file, backup and NIS+ server. The rack to
hold all
of this has to be setup and shelfs have to be made. The new server
needs to have SCSI and ATM cards installed. I will be installing
the
new hardware next week and will be doing the actual change over the
weekend of 8/18 and 8/19.
- Setup a new account for a new hire. Setup a computer for the
new
hire. I have put together a "Welcome" packet of information about
the
LHO networks, Common Unix commands, application software that is
available, computer policy, etc. which I hand out to each new hire
(or
anyone who needs the information).

Made model of ultrasound cut prototype sapphire flex joint. First resonant
frequency at 1.7 kHz. Model of bare flex joint with 2 dof. Stiffness in
bending 8000 N/m in one direction, 4000 N/m. Max allowable angles: 0.4,
0.6 degrees. First resonant frequency at 114 Hz. Drawings are needed. Other
model with 1 fles + 50 cm rod and 1 flex + rod + flex. Also computing circular
flex joint for Virginio to compare with inverted pendulum results. Received
AUTOCAD to interface drafting with ANSYS, exchenge doesn't work yet. Probably
a plug-in to write in correct (.ides) format to be purchased.

Duplicated TAMA-Hongo system to set up MIMO control. 20 dB more gain
is needed at low frequency to measure correctly transfer function with
accelerometers.
Leaving Saturday for Japan, will see whether to combine LVDT MIMO as
well for the low frequency part.
