LIGO Hanford Observatory (LHO) Operations

I have been encouraging LHO staff to spend more time on consolidating
gains from installation by getting our documentation up to snuff and
ensuring that we can take ownership, certify performance and operate the
subsystems like we need to do. Fulfilling this other half of our job
descriptions will place some constraints on people's liaison time. You
will see some activities related to this, starting with this week's
weekly report and ramping up. We will also be looking to increase
strength at the sites to keep new hardware installation on track.

Bake Oven:
----------
(K. Ryan)

LHO Vacuum Bake Oven A load #54, consisting of three beam dump horizontal
tubes, one ETM telescope tube and misc. COS clamps and fasteners was
released earlier this week.  The RGA background has been getting
progressively worse starting with load #52 and nearly prevented this load
from being released.

Load #55, consisting of three BSC bellows, is vacuum baking now (the RGA
is also being baked) and should be released tomorrow, 9/3/99.  John
Worden has been inspecting all of the BSC bellows onsite (not already
installed) to try and determine if they show any damage to the typical
8" "inside out" Conflat knife edges. Apparently, a large percentage of
these special Conflat flanges on the BSC bellows have failed in situ leak
tests and he is trying to "weed out" the likely leakers prior to
installation.  He will inspect the bellows comprising load #55 and may
decide to "massage" their knife edges with an Arkansas stone.  Even if
this is done to the clean+baked bellows, it has already been decided
(Dennis Coyne) that they could be wiped down and bagged as UHV clean
baked parts.

Load #56 is unknown at this time.

Bartie and I will be unwrapping the heating blankets and insulation from
Vacuum Bake Oven A before begining load #56 in order to inspect the
thermocouple-to-oven contact integrity.  We recently determined that, at
least, one of the thermocouples had "lifted" off of the oven surface
resulting in bogus temp readings for that heat zone.  If this appears to
be a potential problem, we will bond the thermocouples using a special
high temp adhesive (currently utilizing Kapton tape).

Optics:
---------------------
(D. Cook)

Most of this week has been dedicated to working with the optical levers
and monitoring them with the data acquisition system. Learning the DAQ
system and transferring the data to Excel files etc. I have machined a
couple of mounts to hold a parallel plate to help calibrate the photo
diodes. Bill Kells has dabbled with the optical levers also to verify
some of the characterizations. I have also taken some time to catch up on
ordering, organizing the optics lab, machining components to transport
the ETM optics to the Mid and End stations. Hugh and I have also knocked
around ideas for ways of relocating the optic tables in the BSC chambers
after the flourel seats are replaced.

Core Optics Support:
--------------------
(B. Weaver)

This week, I have been doing a lot of shipping and receiving.
It seems that with everyone's exodus from LHO last week, a lot
of equipment is needed in various places.  I have been busy
ordering, preparing, and shipping misc. COS hardware for Mike
Smith to Caltech and LLO.  Doug and I have also been doing the
same for the SUS/LOS group in preparation for optics processing
and installations at LLO.  Hopefully, this will all help in their
upcoming onsite tasks.

I have also begun to spend some time with Richard McCarthy
learning about some of the LIGO areas that I don't know much about,
such as LSC, ASC, and the systems that will run the interferometer.
I am looking forward to broadening my knowledge about LIGO.

Seismic Systems:
----------------------
(C. Gray & H. Radkins)

The Adapter Plate Alignment was completed on BSC2.  The Adapter Plate is
the aligned interface between the Actuation Stack and the coarsely
positioned Piers.  This completes AP alignment in the LVEA.

BSC5-XMid

The Northwest Bellows on this chamber failed its leak check and last
Friday we removed the bellows and examined the knife-edges and gaskets
for obvious sources of the leak.  A few suspicious places were honed and
the bellows was replaced on 8-30.  The leak check on 8-31 showed the
leak was still there.  We removed the bellows again on 9-1 and will again
inspect the knife edges and we'll replace the bellows this time.

HAM 4

The doors have been removed & the small flanges are ready to come off.
Phase I in-vacuo SEI hardware is next.

Computing:
----------
(C. Patton)

After quite a lengthy struggle, Jill's NT PC is now working on the
Caltech VPN, the versions of Netscape, MS Internet Explorer and java
applet plug-in required by the Caltech Oracle applications web page have
been installed and Jill has been able to use this PC to get into the
Oracle applications.  The wrong monitor had been shipped with Jill's
computer, the correct one arrived and was swapped.  The incorrect one
was packaged for shipment back to the supplier.

Two broken monitors have been shipped back to Larry Wallace at Caltech.

Received the final papers needed to get to the Caltech ITS FTP site to
download AutoCAD, so far we haven't been able to get it to download
anything.

Did the usual backups, ordered more supplies, added new user accounts,
helped with several printer and PC problems and kept the GC accounting
paper work up to date.

Electrical & Electronics Systems:
---------------------------------
(R. McCarthy)

We are currently working on the installation of cabling for the outdoor
temperature sensors.  The first plan was to connect them to some of the
PEM channels on the DCU's, but this has now been changed to connect them
into some of the spare channels on the Vacuum Equipment racks.  Due to
this added length we are now waiting for a delivery of cable so we can
complete this connection.

Work was also completed on an interface box for the photodiodes that will
be used for monitoring the PSL beam.

This week also allowed me to work with Corey and Betsy and Doug on cross
training.  Corey was kind enough to help me in troubleshooting some
equipment on IOT7 and he and Betsy walked through the 2k installation
from an electronics stand point.  Of course while talking about various
systems it is quite natural for them to ask specifics about the optics
and path of the beam.  I gave them a general outline of what the mode
cleaner does and how it operates with the assumption that someone will
actually give them the correct information.  Doug on the other hand began
to work with the data viewer looking at the Optical levers.  Before
long he will be a UNIX wizard.

Physics Environmental Monitoring:
---------------------------------
(Fred Raab for M. Lubinski)

Ski, Josh and I set up a station to check sensitivities on the Guralp
seismometers, following the electronic calibration procedure in Guralp's
manual. This follows earlier, separate attempts by Corey and Rick and by
Ski and our summer interns to get decent results working with a single
seismometer. We looked at the V, N/S, and E/W channels on 5 different
seismometers over 4 octaves of frequency from 0.5-8Hz. Our results are
consistent across seismometers and flat over the frequency band we
sampled. We typically obtain 240 Volts/m/s for the horizontal channels
and 125 Volts/m/s for the vertical, compared to 800 Volts/m/s listed on
calibration sheets supplied by our vendor. We also found discrepancies
between calibration-channel input impedances and numbers listed on
calibration sheets. Earlier attempts by Corey and Ski to obtain data help
from the vendor were not very fruitful. We will write up our procedure
and results for review by others who have more experience with these
units.

LIGO Livingston Observatory (LLO) Operations

Beam tube bake out: The BT bake continues to go well. The tube wall is at 167 C and holds steady. PS2 does go into saturation during the heat of the day if we try to push it to higher temps. For this reason we are holding at this temp. The LVEA VE has been pumped down to 7E-6 and we plan a leak test soon. (Allen Sibley, Kerry Stiff)

Detector installation: Installed V-Blocks, baffles, and put dome back on BSC2; put BSC1 door back on, torqued all bolts per spec. Started pump down for leak check. Completed assembling all 8 BSC Fine Actuators. Staging all necessary equipment and tools at the south end station for BSC build-up. Optic alignment of south end station BSC pier adapter plates will start tomorrow (Friday). (Rich Riesen)

Optics: We measured the strength of 100 baked magnets. The measured magnets have been sorted by the strength and grouped from group A (the weakest) through N (the strongest). They are put on cleaned razor blades, wrapped with aluminum foils, and put in an Amerostat bag. All strength data have been entered into the DCC for future reference. We assembled a microscope and a vacuum pump to degas the glue. With Helena and Janeen, we continued preparation of the optics/vacuum-prep lab (cleaned glassware, assembled gluing fixtures, etc.). Janeen and Helena left after a week's visit, hopefully with most of the loose ends tied up in preparation for the "heavy work" beginning their next visit. (Sani Yoshida)

Received the new air-bake oven (damaged by the common carrier). It is perfectly usable but the truck line stacked against instructions and buckled a sidewall. Rearranged some cabinets and the suspension controller rack per Sany's request. Gary has been operating the bake oven in Tom's absence, with Stan's help. Completed about 1/2 of the COS viewports, and am leak checking them this week. Began in earnest shop mods to the straddle fixture. (Jonathan Kern)

CDS: Cleaned up graphic displays on the datalogger. Did some trouble-shooting of the suspension test stand control rack. The cause of the problem is still unknown but has been narrowed down to three hardware components. One cable has been replaced - it failed from abusive treatment. Received the majority of the tools for work benches in the lab. Continued work on the SOS rack in the LVEA. Talked with Stan and Joe about feedthru locations so that we can start pulling cable to the tanks. (Rus Wooley)

Edited all MEDM control display graphs for CDS control server to direct them to point to the Livingston files (Some of them were pointing to Hanford directories before). Currently I am working on CDS Livingston DAQ display programs. Also, continue to order consumable items for the EE Lab. (Juilien Svoboda)

Weather Station  Reconfiguration to allow open and closing of port complete. This makes the weather station more robust. Hour and daily data is on Web now (see http://typhoon.bae.lsu.edu/stninfo/ligo.htm) but not yet reliable due to program changes. James Finney came to the site Tuesday and finished some further sensor tweeks. This coupled with the changes allow web access have caused a software glitches in the data collector at the weather station; fix underway. Error rates so far look good.
Servo Test Stand Stand hardware configured and design of interface cable complete.
CDS Found and fixed broken cable in DCU at end station and changed jumper for reflective memory card for controller (with help of Rolf Bork and Dave Barker). Controler and DCU are now working. JDclient was not working at LLO; Alex found problem to be missing file and sent over so that now we have ability again to collect data using LIGO data collection system. He also setup the web access client.
GRASP Measured transfer function from Mathematica to Speaker output wire and injected compensated chirp and successfully detected Chirp with higher S/N than uncompensated Chirp. Injected Chirp into slab of end station using shaker and collected seismic response using seismometer and accelerometer. The data was processed thru the frame builder in the normal way and ported over using jdclient. Collected end station siesmic data with seismometer and accelerometer on Friday night.
Suspension Test Stand Sani and I found that the side B of the suspension test stand was not working correctly. Later Rusyl and Joe Giame found this to be due to the wiring to the VME boards or one (or more) of the VME cards. I later reconfirmed this conclusion by swapping the wires to the controller box. There are some not understood behaviors even on the good side. (Anthony Rizzi)

Other: Anthony Rizzi began teaching his graduate level course in General Relativity at LSU on Tuesday Aug. 26th. He will give a talk on Special Relativity at LLO next Wed. Sept. 8th.

WBS 1.2, 1.3    Detector Group

----------------------------------------------
Interferometer Sensing and Control -- M Zucker
(WBS 1.2.1.1.6, 1.2.1.1.7)
----------------------------------------------
Interferometer sense/control
----------------------------
NOTE: Smith, MacInnis and Zucker have been diverted onto
the Flourel outgassing problem for the last week so
they have little new to report on ISC.
Ken Mason has been working on our Brunson transit square since his
return from LHO and is making progress in understanding and (probably)
counteracting its misbehavior.

On request from LLO we have shipped out the ISC camera and
illuminator housings (today) along with
an updated key drawing for installation of
ISC viewports.
ISC supervisory controls & ISC table installation (Daw)
-------------------------------------------------------
This week I was at the Hanford Site. I installed epics controls
for the IOT7 (Input optics table for the 2k machine) wave front
sensor beam alignment mirrors. The state code for the picomotor
controller driver was written by my student John Leffingwell at
MIT. I also got about half way through setting up ISCT10 working
with Bill Kells.
IO Controls Commissioning (Fritschel, Mavalvala)
-------------------------------------------------
The last 2 weeks there has been intense activity in the commissioning
and characterization of the LHO 2km mode cleaner. The MC is now operating
fairly reliably in s-polarization (as designed), though still at low
input power (approx. 200mW), as the protective electro-optic shutter
which would allow higher power operation is not yet operational.
Highlights of the controls work:
o The wavefront sensor alignment system is now fully functioning, and
does a very nice job of bringing all four alignment degrees of freedom
to the optimal point. This servo actuates on the input beam direction
through two piezo-actuated mirrors. Previous problems with these actuators
were found to be caused by an inappropriate driving scheme -- the pzt
driver was designed for a 3-element actuators, but a 4-element actuator
was actually installed. Last week Jay was able to modify the pzt driver,
after which the pzt mounts gave sensible, and reasonably orthogonal,
pitch and yaw changes on the beam. We haven't yet made loop gain
measurements on the alignment system, but it looks to have a bandwidth
of ~1 Hz. Also, Ed D installed software to control the wfs picomotors,
so that we are able to remotely center the beams on the wfs diodes.
o The length/frequency controls are now working much closer to their
design levels. The high-gain 'bypass' mode has been made to work, and
in this mode we have been able to achieve a 60kHz unity gain frequency,
with overall loop gains of 50 dB @1kHz, and 80 dB @100Hz. The crossover
between the MC length and laser frequency paths has been characterized;
the crossover frequency is set to 3-5Hz, and the length path includes
the low-pass elliptic filter for increased frequency noise suppression.
Actuator control levels are at safely low levels -- the length path
requires about 0.25 micron pk-pk correction, completely dominated by
the first stack resonance at 1.5 Hz; and the vco/laser frequency path
requires ~200mV pk-pk out of its 10V pk-pk range (again dominated by the
1.5Hz stack resonance). The MC has now been locked (including wfs
alignment control) for 15 hrs continuously, the longest stretch to date in
s-polarization.
MC characterization highlights:
o Linewidth measurements (w/ Guido & Haisheng). The linewidth was measured
in two ways: first by a swept-sine amplitude modulation of the input beam,
and looking for the single-pole response on the transmitted power; second
by a ring down/up measurement. Both gave a cavity pole frequency of
3.6 - 3.7kHz.
o Visibility: When the MC is locked and well-aligned, approximately 4% of
the input power is reflected. Some of this power is mode-mismatching, as
there is a 'bull's-eye' component in the pattern. We haven't yet tried
to fine tune the mode-matching.
o The MC can also be viewed as an analyzer cavity for the PSL output
frequency, and by looking at the laser frequency control signal in the MC
loop we can measure the residual frequency noise of the PSL beam. Using
a calibration of the PSL vco actuator supplied by Rich (which needs to
be verified), we've made a calibrated spectrum of the PSL frequency noise:
http://www.ligo-wa.caltech.edu/~nergis/PSLfreqnoise.pdf
(don't take the power line peaks too seriously, as they may be in the
measurment setup)
Future work will go into increasing the input power, which will require
fixing a problem with the interface to the EO shutter controller. Another
problem that we have is that the input beam has significant pointing
fluctuations, which produce fluctuations in the MC transmitted power
of a few percent (the beam position just before it enters the HAM
fluctuates by 50-100 microns pk-pk). It is clear that the fans on the
PSL enclosure are responsible for some of this -- they make fluctuations
of ~30 micron p-p on time scales of a few tenths of a second. But even
with the fans off, there remain slower fluctuations (~1 sec) of ~70 micron
amplitude; these we haven't found the source of.

Lasers and Optics -- J. Camp
(1.2.1.1.2, 1.2.1.1.3, 1.2.1.1.4,1.2.1.1.5)
--------------------------------------------
Prestabilized Laser -- Peter King
--------------------------------------------
- SN #103a has been re-installed on the LLO IOO/PSL table.
- The phase-correcting electro-optic modulator has been installed between
the NPRO master oscillator and the power amplifier. The output of SN #103a
has been aligned into the reference cavity, with some work to do on the
mode matching.
The diffraction efficiency of the frequency shifting acousto-optic
modulator was measured to be ~85%.

Input/Output Optics -- Dave Reitze, UF
-----------------------------------------
LHO 2k (Guido Mueller, Dave Reitze)
Thanks to Peter, Nergis, Guido and Haisheng, a good week:
- MC cavity linewidth was measured via AM sept sine wave; result was
3.69 KHz (corresponds to a finesse of 1330 and mirror transmission of ~
2300 ppm; design was 1550 and 2000 ppm).
- MC ringdown (field decay time with low frequency low amplitude
square wave AM) was also measured; result is a 22 us decay time, which
gives a linewidth roughly 3.7kHz, consistent with above measurement.
- MC frequency fluctuations were measured. The calibration is only
roughly known (spec data from the VCO), so the result is maybe wrong by a
small factor. But the frequency fluctuations around 1k are about a factor
of 8 too large.
- mode matching into the MC measured to be ~ 96%
- more investigations were done on PSL table pointing fluctuations;
above 0.5 Hz, pointing is dominated by HEPA blower coupling to something
(as yet unknown) on the table. Still chasing this one down.

# DHS With this and Peter's report above, sounds like we have learned an enormous amount. There are truly two (three? four?) subsystems working together.

LLO 4k (David Tanner, Sany Yoshida)
- Beginning to assemble SOSs for the IO
Mechanical Design (Dan Dickrell)
- Ordered new mic heads for SOS positioner
- Finished new PSL layout for 2k, 4k tables
- Worked on optimized mode matching lens positions using recent results.

Core Optics Procurement and Metrology -- GariLynn Billingsley
-------------------------------------------------------------
We are 2/3 of the way through the measurements of RM04. All of our data
runs are at night. The mystery vibration source resumed in Lauritsen at
our halfway point. Whatever it is it continues 24 hours a day for several
days (up to 2 weeks in the past) any ideas of how to locate the source are
welcome. Thankfully the temperature is now stable enough to allow us to
average a bit longer and reduce some of the vibration noise.

Core Optics Coatings -- Helena Armandula
--------------------------------------------------
Finalized the configuration for the transmission measurement system. Will
start characterizing the detector.

Core Optics Support -- Michael Smith
------------------------------------

PO TELESCOPE
Ken M. and Mike S. assembled the APS PO telescope at LHO, but were unable
to align the dielectric coated parabolic mirrors. A pair of dielectric
coated mirrors is set up in the optics laboratory at CIT in order to
investigate the problem. Several alignment fixtures are being made to aid
in the alignment. Ken and Mike will return to LHO on 9/8 to bench align the
PO telescope.
ETM TELESCOPE
The ETM telescope for BSC6 was assembled at LHO and is awaiting insertion
of the eyepiece lenses, and focus adjustment with the IR laser. Craig C.
has prepared a set of drawings for the alignment autocollimator support
structure in BSC6 to be fabricated.
STEERING MIRRORS
50 sets are cleaned and baked and are awaiting assembly at CIT.
VACUUM WINDOW
Awaiting the completion of the vacuum windows by Jonathan at LLO.
ARM CAVITY BAFFLE
Paul K. has sent out a bid packages for the outer frame assembly. He is
working on the top
assembly drawings for LHO and LLO.
CONICAL BAFFLE
First article was inspected by Craig C. and Bill T. After a small rework,
the baffle will be cleaned and airbaked prior to completing the remainder
of the production baffles.
AUTOCOLLIMATOR
The optical elements of the COS autocollimator are being anti-reflection
coated to eliminate excessive internal glare.

Detector Systems Engineering -- D. Shoemaker/D Coyne
(WBS 1.2.1.1.9)
---------------------------------------------------------

Global Diagnostics System
(Daniel Sigg, John Zweizig)
This week I continued writing and testing and documenting
DMT software. In particular I have spent a major portion of
the week getting everything to run under the new gcc compiler
(v2.95.1) that was installed at Caltech and will probably be
installed soon at LHO to maintain compatibility between the
development and target sysems.
More testing of the frame multicast interface: The data flow
seems stable now. The current frame size is 4MB.
A test filter has been attached to the excitation engine with
both the input and output read by the DAQ system. This
allows to test the swept sine measurement capability of the
diagnostics test tool.
Installed the most recent patches for the sparcworks compiler
on CDS machines.

Physics Environmental Monitor(Matt Smith, David Shoemaker)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Matt is concentrating on Fluorel seats.

WBS 1.4.3    Systems Engineering / Data Analysis and Computing

Systems Engineering

The MIT group is working to qualify a post-wash bake regimen for the SEI fluorel seats.

Modeling

Hiro Yamamoto

* Built a frequency and amplitude noise generator for the laser, working together with Rick and Malik, using data provided by Peter King.

* Tested various components of PSL how the noises are suppressed. Some part was not working quite right and those are under investigated now.

* The length related part of the IOO subsystem has been finished by S.Klimenko and Malik.

* A limitation of the digitized time step model used by e2e was found. When there is an artificial delay inserted into a loop with digital filters, the time step is required to be smaller than any time scale involved in the loop. This is being invested if the requirement can be removed or if we need to modify the parameter of the digital filter parameters in IOO and PSL.

* PSL and IOO integration was tried.

* Updated adlib code for new gcc.

* Discussed with Mike about the fitting of the phasemap.

* Replied to an inquiry from Prof.Ohashi about the simultaneous measurement of TAMA and 40m.

Sam Mandegaran (this years surf student who will continue to work for me for two more months) Started to simulate 2K FP using e2e in order to characterize the effect of misalignment and displacement of mirrors in the 2K FP cavity.

Brian Eng
* Delivered a class library for a equation parser.

Ed Maros
* Worked on getting e2e software to compile with GCC 2.95.1
* Worked on Conrad's code

Biplab Bhawal
* Working from India using laptop and coming back this weekend.

Data Analysis System

[Kent Blackburn]

* (JKB) Completed tests of the new GNU 2.95.1 C/C++/G77/etc.
compilers under Linux. Decided to go ahead with the
change over to GNU (from EGCS) for the LDAS. This
had the expected result of catching lots of none
ANSI C++ lines of code which the EGCS compiler let
get through. Everyone had to make updates of LDAS
code to bring it into compliance. Packages tested
include MPI, LAPACK, CLAPACK, ddd, gdb, tcl/tk and
        most of the LDAS software.

* (JKB) Updated the now 2 year old frequecy noise model C++
code to be compliant with the GNU 2.95.1 compilers.
This was done as a result of a request to generate
new whitened noise estimates for LIGO I.
Wrote a small program to calculate the ratio of the
power in the LIGO I noise spectrum versus the white
noise in the same band. The results are that for LIGO I
there is about 7 times more noise in the violin mode
lines than there is in the broadband noise floor if it
is perfectly whitened. Of course it will not be perfectly
whitened so this is a lower limit for use in the estimate
        of the dynamic range needed!
[AL Note: relevant to estimating LIGO II
        dynamic range].

* (JKB) Worked on educating the staff on how to trace down the
differenced and bugs in their codes to make it compliant
with the GNU compiler and the ANSI standards without the
necessity of having a working version of the LDAS.

* (JKB) Attended a Non-Disclosure meeting with NetApps on their
current line of network storage systems and what will be
        in the pipeline next year.

* (JKB) Met with Ed to discuss CVS Repository Tags.

* (JKB) Aside: David Farnham left LIGO on Friday to persue a PHD
in Physics here at Caltech. His contributions to the LDAS
weeklies will be missed by all. However, Nathan Yospe has
now joined us and will soon be adding his own richness to
        these summary reports.

[Masha Barnes]

* (MB) Had a meeting on LIGO_LW objects with Albert and Roy.

* (MB) Implemented getLwData function for lwAPI, tested it.

* (MB) Rebuilt IBM XML parser with new gcc-2.95.1 compiler:
       - for LINUX
       - for Solaris.

* (MB) Working on puLwData() for lwAPI: ability to store raw data
in external files for specified elements.

[ Phil Ehrens ]

* (PSE) Fixed bugs in configure scripts and Makefiles for the
        LDAS software installation.

* (PSE) Added support for the lightweight API to the resource
files for the manager and low-level API's, and wrote a
preliminary resource file for the lightweight API.

* (PSE) Installed new versions of Tcl compiled with the gcc-2.95.1
compiler -- we will have two versions of Tcl available in
the future; a "production" version, optimised for speed,
and a "debugging" version with full symbols and a built-in
memory leak detector.  This is possible due to a free
extension to tcl (tclX) which takes advantage of the hooks
built into the latest release of Tcl to support the TclPRO
        debugger.

[Xiao Hu]

* (XH) worked on performance test

* (XH) worked on metadataAPI for testing purpose

* (XH) added triggers for db2 on metaserver

[Mary Lei]

* (ML) Verified that extra db2sysc processes are from agent pool
by setting num of agents in pool to 0. Back to 6 db2sysc
       when no clients are connected.

* (ML) Set up metadataAPI test environment on deneb for Xiao.

* (ML) Examined process address space esp. heap and stack
using pmap to establish a baseline leak pattern for tclsh.

* (ML) Update dataSend and dataRecv in LDASgwrap to
do data socket communications between APIs.
Currently working on sending ilwd from metadataAPI to lwAPI
       to output ligo_lw.

* (ML) Changed metadata test scripts to be invoked from a
       common test driver via options.

[Ed Maros]

* (EFM) Compiled ObjectSpace using GCC 2.95.1

* (EFM) Continuing efforts to compile ldas software with GCC 2.95.1

[Nathan Yospe]

* (NY) Configured system to usable functionality under red hat (located
       tools, set up env, etc)

* (NY) Compiled Walid's library and began draft of wrapper

* (NY) Compiled lwcmd.cc (Lightweight API) without incident; still have
to duplicate errors found by Maria in building; attempted to make
at the same level she found problems, without success.  Minor
changes made in include statements to recognize files may be
responsible, though not in any intuitive manner.

[Bruce Sears]

* (BS) Ilog system:

       - Continuing development graphical interface for use in maintaining
the ILOG group configurations in a relatively simple manner by any
group manager.  (This is taking longer than expected due to the
complexities involved in having user overlap between ILOG groups.)
             - Allows change of group name.
             - Adds users to group configuration (including all web access and
               password files).
             - Deletes users.
             - Modifies user access permissions.
             - Addition of group keywords.

* (BS) LDAS Web Service Set-up and Maintenace:

        - Reconfigured web service on spica and setting up area to distribute
LDAS data products via spica's web server.

Stuart Anderson: With the help of Phil Ehrens and Adam chandler, LIGO has
claimed salvage rights to the 80x4GB Scalable IO (SIO) disk subsystem from the
recently decommissioned Intel Paragon computer at CACR. 8 of the 10 19" rack
units with 8 hot swappable disks and 2 hot swappable power supplies each now
reside in the 6th floor Millikan computer room and are awaiting the purchase a
few SCSI controllers and internal SCSI cables to be connected to LIGO hardware.
The bulk of the drives will be used to test the viability of a large software
RAID solution for the disk cache subsystems needed by LDAS.

Larry met with Kent B. and discussed purchases needed for the LDAS at
Livingston. Kent was to meet with Albert to work on more of the details, which
Larry will also work on when he returns to CIT.
Larry checked the wall space in the mass storage room at Livingston for the LDAS
setup. There is only about 15ft. of length to work with. There may be only 14ft.
depending on safety requirements.

General Computing

MIT:
Nothing to report

Hanford:

Livingston:

With Tom on vacation Larry went to the Livingston Observatory to cover for a few
days.
Installed new print drivers for the new HP color Laserjet 4000N printer. The
print quality has improved significantly.
Added new user. Checked out a few network and VPN items.
A number of the PC's need new monitors and more memory. The monitors are just
going bad and the memory is needed to meet the new usage and software
requirements put on the units.
Working on a ACAD upgrade for Allen Sibley. Also, all of the machines need newer
versions of the Virus-scan software. Larry will work on that when he returns to
Caltech.

CIT:

Ed M. has upgraded a number of SUN boxes to Solaris 7. Also, connected a local
printer to Hiro's Sun box.

Suresh, completed monthly full backup of LIGO servers. Used new tape robot
(Qualstar 4210) for remotely backing up some servers. However, incremental
backup is yet to be worked out on this.
Wrote a shell script which is running as a cron job checking for certain file
dropped by hacker. However, it needs improvement to include other features.
Setup a new user account.
Working on renewing Matlab licenses.
Moved a number of computers and monitors around.

Barbara K. continued to troubleshoot the backup job for the DCC database.  The
jobruns just fine if it's started via the scheduler during the day.  During
the early AM run, it issues 'network password invalid' messages.   Seems
like the network link goes to sleep overnight.
Worked with Linda to restore the authors and keywords dropped from the
DCC database.  We are sorting out the little gotchas so Linda can start
using the new document directories.
Made a number of LIGO web site changes -- installed newsletter,
reformatted the LSC pages, added a page for the science bulletin boards.
Updated the WebDocs database.
Set up database tables, forms, and reports for LLO celebration.
Imported data from Coles' spreadsheets.

Larry worked with the 40M group to get their computers back on-line Friday
evening.
Placed a number of orders for networking equipment.
Worked some of the modem pool issues. We still need to upgrade the setup of the
Livingston box to work better with the new Cisco router.
Reworked some of the wiring in the computer room and closet. Trying to get rid
of the old unused items. Worked with ITS on some of their wiring issues for the
installation of CITNET2000.
Reset some of the automount tables to accommodate the new Webdocs system Barbara
is putting in place.

WBS 1.4.4.1    Administrative Group

Rita Torres

Spent a large chunk of time attempting to input requisitions in D. Lloyd's absence. Did ok until the system refused to cooperate for a few days which forced me to do manual reqs., now things are ok again. Today ongoing input of requisitions, arranging for purchases and other related actions.

For I. Petrac did change order No. 6 to CSIRO, change order No. 6 to CRDF (Moscow), change order No. 3 to University of Wisconsin, and change order No. 4 to Pegasus. For E. Jasnow did backup information for PO with Beuerman Miller Group for celebration ceremonies at LLO. For Detector Group did site trip updates on the web.

Irene Baldon

Worked on preparing the paper work for 15 new trips taken recently (15 Purchase Requisitions and 6 Advance Requests). There are approximately an additional 23 new trips in various stages pending completion of travel arrangements before the paper work can be completed.

Completed 40 Expense Reports, some of which were extensive, involving 2 or more pages each. Many of these reports were still not taped or completed by the Traveler, and required additional time for completion. I would like to request that staples not be used when attaching receipts to 8-1/2 x 11 white paper. Also worked on a number of problem issues which required a good portion of my time. There are 12 Expense Reports still to be done, plus approximately 2 that require extensive work to complete.

I continue to push for both Advance and Expense Checks already submitted. "The System" is extremely slow in processing these. Performed normal recording and filing associated with Travel and Reimbursement. Travel has yet to be worked out in regards to ORACLE and things are still in a state of extreme confusion. Things change many times from hour-to-hour. It is very difficult to get things through or out of "The System."

Prepared Travel/Vacation Itinerary for the Week of August 30, 1999.

Performed miscellaneous duties as requested by various members of the LIGO Project here at Caltech, as well as from members of the staffs of each of the two (2) sites. I continue to do MIT's travel to the sites for installation activities and assist them wherever possible.

Elizabeth K. Wood

Communicated with Mark Coles several times concerning the LIGO Inauguration in November. Also worked with Barbara K. in using Access to keep track of all the invitees.

Attended a telecon with the Caltech Public Affairs folks, Mark, and Gary concerning the progress of the LIGO Inauguration.

Spent a great deal of time hunting down addresses for the invitations to the LIGO Inauguration. The web is useful for locating such things, but only if the URL is correct AND if the server at the other end is functioning.

Finally received the missing petty cash check. All it took was one phone call after waiting two weeks wondering what had happened to it. Yes! We have petty cash again!

Stanley Beilock will be filling in for Kris Duncan while she recovers from pneumonia. He is sitting in room 36 BA at extension 2976 until further notice.

Attended a class on internal web charges. Interesting class.

Ordered several batches of items using my p-card.

FedExed the new payroll forms to the sites.
