Weekly Report Highlights

LHO corner station seismic installation complete for 2k IFO!

LIGO Hanford Observatory (LHO) Operations

Another big landmark was passed this last week. On Friday, May 28, the dome went down on BSC7, marking the end of major installation work on the
corner-station, seismic-isolation systems for the 2K interferometer!

Bake Oven:
----------
(K. Ryan)

LHO Vacuum Bake Oven A load #33 consisting of IOO optics MCCM2K01-1, MCFM08-1 and MMT22K-1 was
released on 5-28-99.

Load #34 consisting of core optics 2FM01-A, 2ITM01-C was released on 6-1-99. The thermocouple wires for two of the seven heat zones were crossed during
the first 20 hours of this load. This resulted in one of the two running cooler (50C) than the setpoint (80C) and the other running hotter (150C) than the setpoint.
Luckily, the zone that exceeded the setpoint is a small remote zone that does not have a direct line of site in which to radiate to the optics. As such, I don't believe
the optics' magnets exceeded their Curie temp.

Load #35 consisting of three HAM bellows is baking and is to be released on Monday 6-7-99.

Seismic Isolation Installation:
-------------------------------
(C. Gray, H. Radkins)

BSC7 Work:

The stack, including the Leg Elements and Coil Springs, was completed and the Downtube was suspended on the Stack by Corey, Stan W, Peter Saulson, Betsy
W, and Robert Schofield. The Kapton cabling was installed by Josh Meyers and Corey; and the Counter weights were positioned on the Optics Table by Betsy,
Corey, and Josh. The Fixturing hardware was removed and the Dome and Door were replaced allowing Robert Scholfield to take magnetic field measurements on
the chamber over the long weekend. It is currently being pumped down. The Translation Stages were reconnected to the Air Bearings (disconnected earlier for
leaky Bellows work).

BSC8 Work:

Switched out Translation Stages (see BSC4 explaination). The Optics Table elevation will be set. This was done earlier but the first set of Actuation Hardware did
not have all the Limit Switches installed, set, or tested; so, we can now set the Table without worry of future swap outs which requires repositioning the system.

BSC4 Work:
The remaining 70 lbs of Counterweights were installed on the Optics Table while we were inside for the BSC7 work. The OSEMs were also removed from the
Recycling mirror in HAM9 while inside. Near term tasks include the swapping out of Translations Stages(Originals installed did not have limit switches set,)
swapping the Flexure Fixtures for the Coarse Flexures(received LHO 6-3), and installing the cabling for the Coarse Actuation System.

CAS Rack:
Once the BSC8 Optics Table is moved back to nominal position, the Coarse Actuation System Rack will be moved to its final home between BSCs 4 & 7. This
will allow the cabling (received LHO 6-1) installation to be completed and the Optics Table to be positioned in BSC4. No cabling has yet been received for BSC7.

BSC6 (Y-Mid):
The Mid station is crowded with much hardware and fixturing in preparation for the SEI push there. The Roller System has been modified for use over the Ion
Pumps and will be positioned near the chamber once the Turbo Pump has been removed and the Adapter Plate Alignment has been completed. We are waiting for
the X-Fine Translation Stages before the external hardware can be completed, we expect this mid to late June.

Optics:
---------------------
(B. Weaver)

This week, Doug and I received the FMy and ITMy from the vacuum
bake oven and recleaned them. We then moved them into their LOS
structures and suspended them. We will verify their balances next week,
and then they will be ready for re/installation. Today, I am cleaning the
FMx to begin it's processing. We (not sure which group of we's) will
glue magnets to the FMx next week. The ITMx has also been reinserted
into the processing cycle and will be back on schedule shortly. I have also
been making up more magnet/standoff assemblies with Helena's new procedure.

Last week, Peter Saulsen and I pulled the OSEMs out of the RM in HAM 9 via
a short walk from BSC 7. Doug and I pulled the filters off of them and cleaned
them up, so they are now ready to be reinstalled. While inside the chambers,
Peter and I also added weights to the BSC 4 table (not enough were installed
initially).

Along the lines of OSEMs, I've gathered and assembled all of the long OSEMs
we have here at Hanford. We have 37 altogether, with 20 being used this week
for the FMx, ITMx, FMy, and ITMy. I will be measuring all of the OSEMs this
afternoon to verify their open light voltages. I will also serialize them
so that
we can keep better track of them.

Computing Systems:
------------------
(C. Patton)

Investigated problems with the elm and pine mail tools on rainier and apex. Did the usual weekly backups, reconciled my LHO GC budget with financial reports,
and added/modified a couple of user accounts. Helped a user with a mail tool problem. Worked with FORE Systems to get a quote for the LHO ATM equipment
maintenance contract. Rebooted the server after it crashed, apparently from a print job. Ordered more licenses for the Workshop compilers for the CDS server.

Beam-Tube Bake Out:
-------------------
(M. Lubinski, M. Guenther, and W. Althouse)

The turbo and cryopumps have been removed from X2-1 and 9. Both ports have been baked after reinstallation of the "H" hardware. Port X2-9 failed the leak
check. Upon disassembly and inspection found a crack(very tiny) in the copper gasket. The gasket was replaced and the port has been re-baked. Port X2-1
passed the leak check. The RGA has been removed from port X2-5, baked following installation of the 4.5" conflat. The port passed the leak check. PUD(Public
Utility District) came out Tuesday and disconnected all power to the beam tube bake out transformers. We completed the loading of 2 20' containers full of bake
out equipment and
sent it on to Livingston. We sent 2 more Cryopumps to CVI for refurbishment. These will be sent directly to Livingston upon completion of work.

LIGO Livingston Observatory (LLO) Operations

Detector Installation: The BSC pillar adaptor plates in the X-arm end station have been optically aligned. Installation of the HAM2 seismic stack has begun. We are also staging the seismic components and tooling for the BSC. The LVEA VE is at atmosphere and is being purged with clean air, to support installation of the HAM 2 stack.(Rich Riesen, Allen Sibley)

CDS: The Livingston CDS web site will be ready for viewing in about a week. I have left several messages with Proxima trying to arrange a demonstration of their multimedia projectors in our control room. No word back yet. We have received four 162 processors from Hanford for the IO rack and suspension test stand. Xycom XY220's were shipped to Hanford on Friday, May 28. We should receive ours from Hanford in about a week. SOS controller for the suspension test stand has arrived. Cable tray in the corner station is about 90% complete. We have been held up due to stack assembly in HAM's 2 & 3. We will finish the corner station next week and move on to the end stations. (Russ Wooley, Juilien Svoboda)

Optics: The next bakeload of the LOS for MMT-3, as well as a large batch of SOS hardware is in the oven, thanks to Jordan and Gary. The SS baskets I ordered worked well for managing small SOS bits-n-pieces. I completed the installation of the ISC groutplates in the end-stations. One of the groutplates was missing a clearance hole for a monument, so Jordan located it for us and we had Southern hydro-cut it in their shop. Inspected the two new flowbenches, and sketched out two frames to support the 4" breadboards. Working on the machine shop when time permits, and obtaining bids on a suitable mill and toolroom lathe. (Jonathan Kern, Tom Evans)

Beam tube bakeout: DEMCO (local power provider) visited the site in preparation for installation of power cables to the bake out transformers. The LLO HV lines have a different connector than LHO. We are looking at several options for modifying the cables sent from LHO. We should have power by 6/14 to begin installation of the data acquisition system. We have interviewed several people to support bake out, and will be getting them on board in the next 2 weeks. (Allen Sibley, Cecil Franklin, Kerry Stiff)

General computing: We have been getting prices for the remaining software packages we need. (Tom Evans)

WBS 1.2, 1.3 Detector Group

Interferometer Sensing and Control -- M Zucker
(WBS 1.2.1.1.6, 1.2.1.1.7)
----------------------------------------------

ISC Design and Fabrication (K.Mason, M. MacInnis)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
The design and assembly drawings of the dark port ISC tables (WISCT10,
WISCT4, and LISCT4) have been completed. The preliminary drawings are
D990135-0-S1 and D990135-0-S2 and are located on the Caltech ftp site at
/pub/kmason. The drawings are in dwg and pdf formats.

Myron has assembled a clean room and has begun assembly of WISCT10.

ISC fabrication and installation (Matt Smith)
----------------------------------------------
Had all of the riser block machined by Larry Larson to accomodate the
isolation of the photdiode from the facility ground. Reinstalled all of
the riser blocks and photodiodes for the 2K RM, BS,Y-ITM, and Y-FM. (Used
Kapton tape as well as an isulating bushing). Checked with volt meter and
it was okay. As we get more photodiodes we will install them into the
optical lever assemblies.

Installed beam tube between the optical lever for the 2K fold mirror so
that John Worden can reroute the annulus piping to the gate valve.

Replaced the photdiode on the 2K RM.

RFAM noise measurements (Kells/Mavalvala)
------------------------------------------
The 29.5 MHz photodiode was repaired and reinstalled in the IO beam to
measure the RFAM noise with higher light level. Some small contributors
to the IF noise spectrum were eliminated, e.g. light reflected from the
PD itself. The RFAM noise is at the shotnoise level at ~700 Hz and
about 3 dB above shotnoise around 150 Hz. There are some resonant
features in the spectrum but there is a clearly identifiable continuum
of excess noise. We are still looking for the source.

We are also exploring a procedure for alignment of the EOMs that
minimizes the RFAM and of course preserves maximum throughput.

We took a first look at the intensity noise form the laser at low
frequencies (few Hz to 10 kHz). The calibrated numbers are still
to be made but the spectral content looks quite different from the
IF spectrum of the RFAM.

Lasers and Optics -- J. Camp
(1.2.1.1.2, 1.2.1.1.3, 1.2.1.1.4,1.2.1.1.5)
--------------------------------------------

Prestabilized Laser -- Peter King
--------------------------------------------

- The intra-MOPA EOM has been installed in the LLO PSL laser.

- The LLO PSL reference cavity vacuum chamber has been positioned on the
IOO/PSL optical table and is currently being pumped down by the 20 l/s ion
pump.

- Periscopes to step the beam down to the optical height of the PSL
(approx. 76 mm) have been installed. In addition an attenuator, comprising
of a half waveplate and polarizing beamsplitter cube, has been installed.

- Half of the remaining zero length vacuum viewports for the other reference
cavity vacuum chambers are scheduled to ship by the middle of next week
(06/07).

Input/Output Optics -- Dave Reitze, UF
-----------------------------------------

Hanford 2-k IOO

Sany Yoshida is at LHO now. David Tanner and Dan Dickerel will be there
next week.

SOS Preparation

All suspended mirrors survived the vacuum preparation and have been placed
in the HAMs. We have installed five 1" optics on fixed mounts (T-mounts)
on HAM7. During this installation, we noticed that two of the three
T-mounts that were already on HAM7 had the optic holder (the cylindrical
holder) on the opposite side of the mount. (The cylindrical holder was
stickong out to the rear side of the mount.) We corrected these problems.
All the 1" optics have been aligned with reference to the screw holes on
the HAM table. Now we have placed all the optics on HAM7. The in-vacuum
IOO components are essentially complete.

# DHS GREAT NEWS.

PSL/IOO table

We have installed a calcite polarizing beam splitter cube (PBSC) after the
lambda/2 plate near the IOO/PSL handoff location to facilitate reducing
beam power. This will be a permanent installation.

The forward-going rejected beam from the PBSCs (one to be placed as
described in item 1, above, and the one just before the EOMs) will be
dumped in an OptoSigma beam dump. We will eliminate the razor blade dumps
because they are oily. D. Tanner is oversing the procurement of anodized
aluminum dumps that encircle the PBSCs mounted in rotation stages. IOO
will install them. When - forward-going dump with temporary encircling
dump at time of installation of PBSC. Permanent encircling dumps Right
now, an OptoSigma beam dump and 2 anodized aluminum dump sheets are used
for the volume control unit installed last Friday.
The status of the permanent units is that they have been designed and a
prototype made. They are in the shop now.

In addition a cover to protect the back of the mirror mounts has been
designed and a prototype made. They are in the shop now. This unit is
mainly to make tampering a little more difficult and to protect the
adjustment screws from inadvertant nudging.

Mode Matching Measurement for Single Arm Cavity Test

Guido has completed the layouts and the calculations for the bullseye
measurements.

Core Optics Procurement and Metrology -- GariLynn Billingsley
-------------------------------------------------------------

Measurements are complete for SPETM03, the first of the pair which has
been selected to go to Hanford. This optic will go to cleaning June 7th
and should ship to Hanford by June 14.

We have reported longer radii of curvature for the SPETMs than
anticipated, however matching appears to be quite good. There has been a
flurry of e-mails and analysis (many thanks to Bill Kells) last weekend.
It is my current understanding the longer radii are acceptable, and that
we will be using the SPETMs as they are.

Michael Hrynevych and I are at NIST, we are currently comparing seismic
data between NIST and the CRL at Caltech. It appears that the NIST campus
is quieter than Caltech. The probe used for both measurements is the
same, however the spectrum analyzer is not. The difference is fairly
significant, so we are double checking before reporting exact results.

Core Optics Coatings -- Helena Armandula
--------------------------------------------------

REO Contract - COC's coatings. We coated the HR side on a pair of 4kITM's.
Coating looks good. Made the decision not to coat 4kITM01. The surface looks
stained and cloudy. We tried for two days to get it clean by different
approaches without success. The stains are going to look more prominent
after coating. It looks as if the polishing compound was not properly
removed and cleaned after polishing. A third 4kITM, HR side, is getting
coated today.

Core Optics Support -- Michael Smith

Seismic Design (Mike Fine)
--------------------------------------
1. Electronics Rack
Progress is continuing with the rack assembly. Due to the programmatic
needs for BSC cabling and junction boxes Hytec has not completed the internal
wiring as expected. This has pushed their schedule back by three to four
days. They are expecting to complete the rack by the end of this week and
hoping to turn the rack on no later than Friday. Debugging and
software changes will need to take place at this time.

2. Scissors Tables
Hand Precision is continuing on the scissors table assembly for the April
and May delivery. They have not completed them as of today, but expect the
machining to complete next week. Hytec will assemble as many BSC scissors
tables to be delivered on the next shipment to LLO.

3. Near-Term SEI Hardware Delivery Schedule:
1 BSC Downtubes (Livingston) 6/8
2 BSC support tubes (Livingston) 6/8
1400 # counter weights 6/8
1 CAS rack (Livingston) 6/28

    2. Accelerometer positions and locations are posted at
       http://web.mit.edu/marin/www/Accel_Cable.html

    4. The preliminary version of the Particle Detector design has been
sent to interested parties and possible sites for discussions and comments.

    5. We are updating the PEM-FD with the latest indications and
modifications.

    3. Matt is in Hanford and sent the following report:

Assembled all of the PEM stay clear zone railings for each building. The
baseplates will be remade by the vendor and will be installed later.

Installed one of the Beam Tube interface plates. Will install the rest of
them Thursday. Modified the 3 channel Wilcoxen signal conditioners to
install them onto the beam tube support cross braces. Made a bracket to
install the signal conditioners to the support cross braces.

Installed accelerometers onto the 2K PSL, WHAMs 7,8,9 and 10, WBSCs 7 and
8. Ran the cables for all of these. Also ran the cables to WBSC4 but
there are no PEM interface plates or accelerometers installed due to leak
checking to be done. Installed a microphone into the 2K PSL.

Installed the software and dongle for the RGA at the Y MID station. The
RGA software is Quadstar 421 for now. No RGA scan has been taken though,
since the chamber is not currently being pumped on and is at a pressure of
~5 x 10 ^-6. I am still trying to get the new software from Balzers. I am
not getting a good response from Balzers on this issue. They seem tobe
dragging their feet on what to do about helping me. Finally they said
that we would have to pay for the upgrade and were suppose to send me a
quote on the new software earlier this week.

============
1. Preparing items for my upcoming trip to LLO (3 June to 11 June)

2. Working on the final Frequency Servo card after upgrading to new cad
system.

3. Began initial phase of design on new Intensity Servo card but need some
data from the new AOM. That data will be gathered during the trip to LLO.

LSC (Rolf)
==========
- Completed timing tests of LSC servo code on Pentium III VME processor.
Timing
comparisons of this board and present CDS 200MHz Mips processor board
(requirement is under 62usec total time):

       Interrupt Filter Total Time
       Latency Calculation w/all necessary
Processor Time I/O operations
---------- --------- ------------ ---------------
Mips <500nsec 37usec 61usec
Pentium III 5usec 16usec 56usec

Pentium was much faster in calculations, but slower in VME access,
particularly
VME bus reads. We can possibly get around this by using the PCI bus to
reflected
memory instead of VME to reflected memory. Factory rep thinks this would be
more
than three times faster and he will perform some tests to verify this by
the end
of the week. If this turns out to be true, the Pentium total times could be
down
to <40usec, giving us a more comfortable margin on the specs for additional
computation, which is sure to come as the system is commissioned.

ASC (Jay)
==============
- The WFS Whitening Board has been received from the vendor. Two boards

done
at a local print house.

DAQ Antialiasing Filters (Sander)
===================================
   A. BNC Version
PCB for the BNC version board is in house. Except for the filter
modules,
all other components are in house. Phoenix will put one together as soon as
the modules arrive.

   B. LEMO Version
Because Fred did not work on the board while I was on vacation, I have
taken over the design job myself. This task should be completed early next
week.

Mode Cleaner CDS (Dale):
================
The programmable delay from gigabuadics arrived at Hanford. It will be used
for tuning the RF/LO phases of the demodulator board. We will then trim the
cables to exact length. Updated control screens for the Length Servo will
be tested at Hanford this week.

Timing System (Dale):
===============
The Clock Fanouts have all been tested. The Clock Driver that produces all
of the timing pulses and sequencing is being tested now. I will be bringing
it with me to Hanford next week to test on the system. Six more GPS
antennas arrived from Brandywine. These will be shipped to Hanford.

LSC One-Arm test, CDS (Dale):
==================
I have started designing filter boards and demodulator for the analog LSC
servo. The demodulator circuit will be close to the final LSC design but
will be a prototype because it will not have all of the packaging
considerations of the final design. The filters are strictly prototype but
will provide useful information fro final LSC filter implementation.

SUBCONTRACTS MANAGEMENT (Petrac, Jasnow)

From: irena@ligo.caltech.edu (Irena Petrac)

[We scheduled a teleconference with MIT Finance types on Tuesday, June 1, to discuss the FY 1999 change order. We are trying to finalize this change order for submittal to NSF. This is tied into unraveling payments and change orders that have been made over the past year. I think that we are all in agreement except that invoices and payments are at least two months behind. -pel]

Modeling

(E2E - in general)

Hiro started to include the numerical integration method developed
by Peter Fritchel for GDS's swept-sine measurement as a part of e2e.
Hiro modified the interactive I/O part of e2e so that comment can
be included in the recorded input file.
Peter feels that the speed is becoming an issue. Hiro compiled
modeler/modeler_freq with the highest optimization, and copied to
ligo.mit.edu. Conrad will work to find the bottleneck using a
profiler. Hiro completed a few digitization routines (A2D_sampler,
VAL_digitizer, and updated digital_filter) and they are documented.
They have not been cvs-ed yet.

(IOO modelling)
We had a two-and-half hour telephonic conference on IOO simulation
effort on June 2. It was attended by Sergei (Florida), Haisheng,
Malik, Rick (LHO), Biplab, Matt (Caltech). Sergei and Malik
presented their recent work on construction of E2E simulation
boxes for optics and control system parts respectively. People
could get a broad and general view of the kind of IOO modelling
problems that we need to face in next few weeks. Some of the
detailed issues on naming conventions, proper input and output
ports and rearrangement of connected modules, acquiring and
managing various parameter values were also discusssed.
In next few weeks Sergei and Malik will try to work together to
(i) run their own boxes separately, (ii) combine their boxes
together (iii) start some validation or shake-down runs.
Merger of IOO with PSL work (being done by Biplab, Rick, Hiro)
involves issues related to merger of codes (for some primitive
modules) developed by Sergei into Adlib and are to be addressed soon.

(Alfi)
(EFM) Ed Maros continued his work on using automake and autoconfig.

(Conrad's week)
o read the following documents:
    - Getting Started with End-to-End model
    - Overview of End-to-End model
o created a simple script for setting up the E2E environment
o reviewed Adlib source code

Data Analysis

* (KB) Met with Phil to evaluate and demo the current version of the
managerAPI and frameAPI tcl scripts. This resulted in about a
dozen minor modifications to the scripts and the interactions
of the managerAPI macros with the LDAS APIs.

* (KB) Met with the LDAS software group to discuss status and progress
as our usual Friday meeting will not take place this week. Among
the most significant accomplishments this week is the successful
building and testing of the XML parser library from IBM using
the egcs compiler on Solaris [see M Barnes' weekly]

* (KB) Met with Phil and Mary to go over the model of the macros used
by the managerAPI as it controls process flow in the LDAS APIs.
This cleared up several points on the usage model and resulted
in a second generation of high level commands for getting data
       from LDAS (frame and/or metadata).

* (KB) Met with Phil Mary Dave and Ed to discuss the SWIG interface as
it is used by C++ classes and presented to TCL. This enlightened
all of us and will provide for a more TCL "look and feel" to the
C++ class wrappers used in TCL code and helps to improve the
readability and hence the maintainability of the TCL code.

- DWF modified the AttributeValue class in the ILWD library to
automatically convert illegal characters (<>&'") into references
when writing the attribute. For example, the string "vector<int>"
becomes "vector<int>". When reading in the attribute, the
references are converted back into their character form.

- DWF continued implementing the conversion of ILWD objects to FrameCPP
objects in the FrameAPI. This is approximately 90% complete, it
      should be finished this week.

(EFM) Installed DB2 Server 5.0 on deneb

(EFM) Installed DB2 Client for Solaris7 testing on denebola

* XHU modified LDAS frame tables

* XHU modified GDS trigger tables

* XHU created more ilwd template files

* (PSE) Migrated queue saving/restoring code from manager
        to generic API module.

* (PSE) Tested existing installed software (on SPICA) on
        DENEB, an ultra2 running 64-bit solaris 7.
Everything seemed to work fine, including the
        genericAPI.so and the frameAPI.so.

* (PSE) Demo'd the current state of the manager and frame API's
to Kent. This pointed up a number of small bugs.
        Fixed the bugs.

* (PSE) Changed format of meta-options for user commands so that
each user command supplies it's own option prototypes and
        defaults.

Phil's weekly from last week:

* (PSE) Wrote functions for the frame API to cache 15 minutes
of frame file absolute path names, and continuously
update the cache with the continuously broadcast frame
names, using the 40 meter broadcast as a prototype
        source.

* (PSE) Helped Ed to synchronise the installed tools on SPICA,
KITALPHA, and SADAN to ensure consistent development
tools on Solaris, Linux x86, and Linux ALPHA platforms.

* (PSE) Tested a variety of the packages installed on SPICA for
runnability on DENEB, which is an Ultra2 running 64 bit
Solaris 2.7. Everything I tested ran as it does on 32
        bit Solaris 2.6.

* (PSE) Installed Tcl/Tk 8.1.1 on SPICA.

* (PSE) Wrote a small document describing the format of messaging
at the various levels of the LDAS system. This will be
posted soon on the development pages.

* (PSE) Met with Mary Lei to discuss the design of the metadata
API and it's incorporation into the LDAS system.

* (BK) The individual forms for the CDS application are complete. Next
they will be assembled into user and administrator views and tested
       more rigorously.

* (MB) Met with Dave and Phil to get information on GNU and SUN compilers.

* (MB) Checked IBM's XML V2.1.0 software supporting Solaris into the
       repository.

* (MB) Built IBM's XML parser library with g++/gcc compilers.

* (ML) Prepared metadataAPI for integrating into the LDAS environment:
added logging via genericAPI; have a new log for each slave
       interp; added exception handling to return errors to top level;
changed metadataAPI so to return database errors to tcl.

* (ML) Attempted to make a safe interp for metadataAPI statement
       execution but it was too restrictive;
will instantiate regular slave interp with restrictions on
       opening files.

* (ML) Discussed with Phil on writing macros for manager.

Majid:

As part of an effort to get the Algorithm library off the ground, I
attempted to work on Welch's method to estimate the power spectral
density. I have conceptually divided the algorithm into its atomic units,
in the hope of reusability of code as well as its modularity. I am
planning on proceeding with the implementation of this algorithm after
a discussion with Sam Finn and Bruce Allen of LSC.

Stuart Anderson
Pre-staged and established regular mirroring of the standard LDAS
software tools (20GB) to LHO in anticiplation of the initial LDAS installation
at LHO in mid June.

Crashed the High Performance Gateway Node (HPGN) interface into
the new CACR HPSS system 4 times. CACR has raised the problem with IBM
as a high severity problem under existing software maintenance contracts.

Arranged for CACR to order 15TB of HPSS tape storage from a
LIGO account (with appropriate LIGO tape labels) to be used for
O(10TB) LIGO HPSS tests using the existing CACR hardware.

Upgraded the LDAS Linux Beowulf cluster to RedHat6.0 and established a
significantly simplified procedure for bringing up NIS+ services on Linux
machines running RedHat6.0 for easy integration of PC's into the existing
LIGO/CIT network.

Continued active research into 1TB class disk cache systems for LDAS
with the most recent meeting being with Andataco an OEM partner for Clarion
Fibre Channel RAID systems.

Lazzarini
Met with Sam Finn to iterate on the numerical algorithm library for LIGO/LSC
development.

General Computing

MIT:
Nothing to report.

Livingston:
Sent in data of SUN boxes to be added to the Caltech site licensing program.

Hanford:
Investigated problems with the elm and pine mail tools on rainier and
apex. Did the usual weekly backups, reconciled my LHO GC budget with
financial reports, and added/modified a couple of user accounts. Helped
a user with a mail tool problem. Worked with FORE Systems to get a
quote for the LHO ATM equipment maintenance contract. Rebooted the
server after it crashed, apparently from a print job. Ordered more
licenses for the Workshop compilers for the CDS server.

CIT:
Barbara reviewed the plan for web services with Gary and received an ok to
proceed.
- Resolved problems converting several long LSC reports to PDF. Access had
problems paginating the memo fields in the report. Then the pagination
didn't hold when the report was transferred to Word (the "Publish with
Word" feature isn't quite what it seems). Cleaned up one report that had
unprintable characters sprinkled throughout. Helped connect Irena to the
server with the LSC reports database.
- Continued to help with Amaldi items -- applications, abstract
registrations, web site changes, submission of papers, etc.

The number of people using the CD burner has increased and the requests for CD's
has also been on the rise. We are now looking at the DVD burner and trying to
get a few people to test it out but so far it is looking pretty good. Suresh is
also trying to clean off a number of dead accounts on the server and will be
transferring the data from those accounts to CD, this includes a number of
people that are now working at the Observatories and are no-longer stationed at
Caltech.

Checking on procurements and tracking down related issues has taken a deal of
time. Also, getting orders out the door before the blackout period has taken a
higher priority.

A number of machines have been moved along with some new installations to
accommodate various areas. Presently, working on the installation of the new
version of cadence on to a new server.

Once again we are working on cleaning off a number of PC's that have been
infected with viruses. The latest versions of virus-scan need to be loaded on
all of the PC's. The older versions are not detecting this latest batch of
viruses.

Monthly backups are being performed at this time. There was a delay because of
some problems with a couple of the tape drives.

We just received a number of network units that we plan on installing in the
next couple of weeks. One is to be used for the CITNET2000 connection. The other
unit will allow us to check things out for the swap over to the new FORE box.

*** PLEASE NOTE *** Due to Caltech's conversion to a new Accounting System, there will be a "Dark Period" during which nothing new will be able to be processed. You are encouraged to make travel arrangements for your upcoming trips from now until August or be prepared to purchase tickets using your personal credit card. This "Dark Period" is scheduled to start on June 16th. HOWEVER, I have set my personal goal as close of day on Friday, June 11th, just to make sure I get your trips done. This also applies to Expense checks and Advance Checks. Thanks for your help. With your assistance we should be able to get through this.

Worked on preparing the paper work for various new trips taken recently (34 Purchase Requisitions and 36 Advance Requests). There are 25 additional new trips in various stages pending completion of travel arrangements, and still coming.

Completed all of SURF Travel except for the 1 student coming from Belgrade, Yugoslavia. His participating in the 1999 SURF Program is becoming doubtful. However I did hear from him last week and he is still optimistic that he will be able to get out. The SURF schedule is from June 14th thru August 20th and many of LIGO's members are acting as Mentors.

Completed 14 Expense Reports, some of which were extensive, involving 2 or more pages each. Many of these reports were still not taped or completed by the Traveler, and required additional time for completion. Also worked on a number of problem issues which required a good portion of my time. Received, but not yet completed my audit, 29 Expense Reports. These should be completed in the next couple of days, barring unexpected delays. I'm still holding 6 expense reports which require additional information and/or missing receipts from the traveler.

Prepared Travel/Vacation Itinerary for the Week of June 2nd, 1999.

Performed miscellaneous duties as requested by various members of the LIGO Project here at Caltech, as well as from members of the staffs of each of the two (2) sites.

Rita Torres

Non-stop action this week. For I Petrac formatted MOU with Tokyo University, also Attachment 1. Did RFQ IP-311 for Creep Measuring Fixture, prepared letters to four bidders, did subsequent edits; obtained 6 sets of large drawings for same and sent all FedEx. Began an Excel list of LSC members, listing their affiliations and email addresses. Did letter to K. Danzmann Re: MOU attachments, prepared FedEx. Did change order No. 6 to K. Creath, change order No. 4 to Lightwave, and change order No. 5 to CRDF.

For E. Jasnow began input to RFP EJ-312 for Electrical Contractor Service for the Beam Tube Bakeout at LLO; 26 pages.

For W. Tyler/M. Zydowicz did edits to Safety Program then distributed for review. Also did edits to Safety Program then verified web links called out, need to find correct links. For W. Althouse continued search for special items, am coordinating with vendor. For admin group continued updates to LIGO Roster (home information), did final input on 6/2/99. Thanks go to C. Mak who will distribute for us

Dorothy Lloyd

Continued working on closing out inactive contracts and POs in IFIS in preparation of moving over to the new system Oracle. Processed a heavy load of invoices for payment, and tracked and followed up on various invoice problems. Signed off on numerous PO receivers. Processed the usual heavy load of POs, reqs, change orders, check request, etc. For further details see Cost Schedule Control System Report by Sarita Moore.

Elizabeth K. Wood

Talked to Veronica and Valeda about issues that are pending with the Amaldi conference.

Continuing to do personnel paperwork before the dreaded dark period descends upon us. Hiring freeze begins at the close of business Friday, June 11.

There has been a suggestion that we start a pool concerning when/if the ORACLE demonstrations/training for LIGOites will actually begin.

Handled on-going personnel issues.

Made arrangements with Criselda to get two more people into the P-Card Classes.

Spent part of Wednesday and Thursday trying to locate whatever became of LIGO's petty cash reimbursement that I sent over to Business Services almost three weeks ago. End result: the 9" by 12" package has vanished. And I thought black holes were only in outer space.

Tracked down some mysterious phone numbers for Larry Wallace. Found the owners.
