Description

The Galileo Galilei School of Graduate Studies at the University of Pisa is a centre of advanced studies open to graduate students from both Italian universities and abroad. Its main objective is to train Dottori di Ricerca (PhDs) of the highest scientific level in the Basic Sciences.

The departments of Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, and Mathematics, with excellent staff, structures, and laboratories, cooperate closely with foreign universities and international centres, as well as with private hi-tech companies. Their tradition of high-level scientific research makes the School a very stimulating place for graduate students and young researchers.

The School aims to attract the best students, both Italian and foreign, and reserves 2-year scholarships for them.

Applications by foreign students, who are not Italian residents and who are currently holding a degree equivalent to an M.Sc. degree by a foreign university, are evaluated by the School Council, based on the documentation presented by the appplicants. Rules for application can be found at

Advance Notice on Admission to Research Doctorate Courses

The University of Pisa is announcing competitions for 2003 admission to the following research doctorate courses:

  • Applied Physics (including Plasma Physics)
  • Chemistry
  • Computer Science
  • Mathematics
  • Physics

A total of eight scholarships will be made available, of which no more than two will be made available for each sinlge course. Each scholarship will be 10,000 Euros net (after tax) per year fr three years.

Qualifications

Foreign citizens who do not reside in Italy may apply if they hold a foreign academic degree equivalent to an Italian specialist degree, i.e. a postgraduate degree such as Master of Science. The equivalence of the qualification will be established by the School Committee purely for the purposes of admission to the program.

Applications must include:

  • Personal information (name, place of birth, place of residence, nationality)
  • Contact address, email, and telephone number
  • Academic qualification with final mark, indicating where and when obtained
  • Which course is being applied for
  • Academic curriculum indicating examinations passed, with the course content and the grade awarded
  • A summary of research undertaken
  • List of publications, if any
  • Two letters of recommendations from university teachers, who have followed the candidate's studies
  • Programme of study and research the candidate intends to follow
  • A photocopy of a valid ID
