Nobel Laureate Masatoshi Koshiba Visits Caltech
LIGOnauts Celebrate January Birthdays!
Shortly before the end of last year, Masatoshi Koshiba, Professor Emeritus at the University of Tokyo, paid a visit to the Caltech campus during which he gave a seminar on his work. Professor Koshiba is a 2002 Nobel Prize Laureate in Physics for his ground-breaking contributions to astrophysics, in particular for the detection of cosmic neutrinos. Professor Koshiba's stay at Caltech was a delightful occasion for many of his campus colleagues, and for those at LIGO in particular. An informal lunch was given for the Professor at the Caltech Athenaeum, where he was greeted and congratulated by many well-wishing students and faculty.

Happy Birthday to all January-born LIGOnauts!
And thanks to everyone who attended the first
in our new "Monthly Birthday Celebrations!"
The turnout for this first fiesta was stellar!
The third-floor Science Conference Room was
stuffed to maximum capacity as jovial Irena Petrac
lead us in a rousing Birthday-song chorus.
A virtual hurricane was created as the January
Birthday Bashers blew out the lone candle that
sat atop a fabulous cake made by our very own
Cindy Akutagawa. She got crazily creative by
using fruit roll-ups as a fruity cake décor.
Quite the tangy treat, we all agreed!
The happy LIGOnauts mingled and munched, and it was great to see so many faces visiting from all around campus. Our fearless leaders were present and sat next to a whiteboard covered with the names of famous January Birthday personages ranging from Joan of Arc to Kid Rock. And all in all, the whole affair totally rocked! Thanks again to everyone for participating in this new monthly tradition!
